Ankara is Turkey's capital and administrative centre — a planned city built to embody the secular nationalist project of the Turkish Republic. The LGBTQ+ scene is thin by the standards of Istanbul or Izmir, but the city is home to Kaos GL, one of Turkey's oldest and most important LGBTQ+ organisations (founded 1994), which has produced the country's most sustained queer journalism and advocacy. The social scene concentrates in the Kızılay and Çankaya districts. Ankara Pride was banned in 2017.
