The Melrose, Bed & Bath

I just stayed at The Melrose this past week. The location is great as it’s about two blocks from the Ocean Grove beach and it’s a quick walk over the bridge to Asbury Park. The place itself is no frills, I want to stress NO FRILLS. This is purely a rooming house with no extra amenities and just the very bare minimum in the rooms. There is no daily room service and not even anyone on-site for any issues you might have. Anytime we sent a message with a question or regarding an issue, it took at least an hour for someone to get back to us. The rooms are mostly clean but our room had stains on the small loveseat and broken drawers in the dresser. You’re only given one set of towels for several days and there was nobody available to ask for fresh ones. There’s a coffee station as soon as you walk into the Melrose with a sofa against the wall that’s awkwardly placed. I would have placed two small cafe tables with chairs so that you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee instead of having to bring it back to your room. The walls in this place are also quite thin, so if you have noisy neighbors you will hear everything. Unfortunately we had a crying baby next door to us and heard the crying most of the night which kept us awake and we were exhausted the next day. All in all, The Melrose is adequate if all you care about is being close to the beach and having a place to sleep, but if you’re looking for something a bit more upscale with some extra amenities and conveniences, this is not the place. The prices they charge are too high for what you’re getting here.

This place is just a block from the beach and the boardwalk. Rooms were very clean. Cleaning staff on-site was very accommodating. Check in was a breeze. They offer a discount code for badges down by the coffee machine/microwave. Parking can be tough so would recommend getting down early and spending the day on the beach before check in.

Phone support was in another country, could hardly speak English. It's took hours to get a few extra towels. The floor was not cleaned.

Disgusting. Would have rather slept on the curb. Dirty. No service. Looks nothing like the website. Gross.

This place is not at all what is advertised. There is only a communal living room. We were shocked when we walked into our place at Melrose. We will never book here again especially paying almost $200 a night. The owners should be ashamed of false advertising. These are the real pictures

This place is a scam. Do not stay here. Gave the wrong room smaller than what paid for. I ask a refund the said i had to pay fee. Yeah what ever. Do not stay here. I booked it on booking.com the weren't helpful at all. Dont use Booking.com. they should be shut down!

I would not recommend staying here. The building was freezing—I’m not even sure if there’s heat. When we asked the host for extra blankets, they told us to search the property ourselves, but there wasn’t a single extra blanket or pillow available. The worst part was the loud scratching and clawing sounds coming from inside the walls at night, which made it nearly impossible to sleep. It was honestly unsettling and made the whole experience even worse. The location is good, but the place itself is uncomfortable and poorly managed. I’m just glad I only stayed one night.

The location is excellent but that's the only good thing....I'm sad to say that I've never had a worse experience then when we stayed at The Melrose and I LOVE Ocean Grove! Apparently it used to be great when owned by a kind, local Ocean Grove family. Now, there is no one on site to address issues like the barely functional AC during a heat wave and no cups for coffee, a severely slanted floor which made the bed very uncomfortable and only half a roll of toilet tissue, a few TINY towels, no beach accessories like chairs or umbrellas. The shower leaked into the room below and when i saw someone coming in to clean, I politely went to inform her of the leak and she started screaming at me like a hysterical banshee - her name was Sheila. I could go on, but please, save your money and your peace of mind and avoid The Melrose!

Do not book a stay here unless you want to waste a bunch of money for a filthy room accompanied by a cold shower, AND awful service. I can’t say I’ve ever had a worse experience. Not sure where to even begin. Just save yourself the money because if you have any issues or need a refund.. the host will dismiss your needs over and over again. Thanks to airbnb I was able to get my money back. The room didn’t even look like the pictures posted, was a lot smaller and the extra rooms like couch are NOT in the private tiny residence you will be spending a fortune on. I had a better experience and room at the motel I was forced to stay at the night of my Melrose reservation.
