Old Capitol Books

Old Capitol Books is an independent bookstore on Alvarado Street in the heart of downtown Monterey, and one of the most consistently queer-welcoming gathering spots on the Peninsula. Beyond stocking the area's largest selection of LGBTQ+, gender-studies and ethnic-studies titles, the shop partners with Monterey Peninsula Pride to host the Rainbow Lounge, an LGBTQ+ hangout held on the third Saturday of each month (18+). Its community focus, author readings and welcoming staff have made it an informal anchor for queer readers and residents in a city without a dedicated LGBTQ+ center. The store sits on the second floor of the Monterey Gallerie building, above Twisted Roots. For visitors it is an easy downtown stop that doubles as a way to connect with the local community and pick up recommendations on Monterey's queer history and events.
