Guia de Viagem
Tudo o que vale a pena saber antes de ir.
Quito is a city of extraordinary contrasts. At 2,850 metres above sea level, it is the world's second-highest capital city and sits in a valley encircled by Andean peaks — a dramatic setting for a colonial city that is simultaneously deeply conservative in its Catholic heritage and home to one of South America's most legally progressive LGBTQ+ rights frameworks. The 2023 marriage equality ruling transformed Quito's status in the regional LGBTQ+ landscape almost overnight, and the city's gay scene in La Mariscal — long established and vibrant — now operates within a framework of full legal equality. La Mariscal, the neighbourhood that locals call the Zona Rosa, is Quito's primary entertainment and tourist district and the centre of the gay scene.
The neighbourhood was originally developed in the early 20th century as Quito's upscale residential area, built in a mix of French and English architectural styles that give its tree-lined streets a distinctive character.
It is now the New City's main concentration of restaurants, bars, clubs, hostels, hotels, travel agencies, and souvenir shops — essentially the tourist infrastructure of Quito compressed into a walkable neighbourhood. Within this commercial density, the gay scene is well-established and visible: a cluster of gay bars, lesbian bars, and mixed venues centred on the blocks around Plaza Foch. Bungalow 6 is the anchor venue of the La Mariscal gay scene — a bar-club hybrid on the main strip that functions as a meeting point for both the local gay community and visiting LGBTQ+ tourists.
It is the venue most likely to be mentioned by hotel concierges and travel blogs, and with good reason: reliable, well-run, good sound, and consistent crowds across the week. Strawberry Fields offers a different register — a smaller, more intimate bar with a loyal following among Quito's lesbian and bisexual community, though welcoming to all. For serious dancing, Infinity Club and Sutra are the two main gay club options in La Mariscal — both with proper club setups, DJs, and the kind of weekend crowds that make for real dance floor energy. For accommodation, Quito has strong options at every price point.
The JW Marriott Quito, located in the financial district adjacent to La Mariscal, represents the luxury tier: a full-service international business hotel with consistent five-star standards, a pool, excellent dining, and the professional gay-friendly service that international hotel groups are expected to deliver. Its proximity to La Mariscal makes it a practical choice for LGBTQ+ visitors who want luxury accommodation within easy reach of the gay scene. Quito's Old City (Centro Hist—rico) is the primary cultural attraction and one of the genuinely great urban experiences in Latin America. The completeness and quality of the colonial architecture — the churches, convents, and plazas largely intact from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries — put it in a category of its own.
The Bas—lica del Voto Nacional (a neo-Gothic church still technically under construction since 1883) offers one of the best panoramic views of the city. La Compa??a de Jes—s, with its elaborately gilded interior, is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the Americas. The Convento de San Francisco, built shortly after the Spanish founding of the city in 1534, is the oldest major religious complex in South America. Getting between La Mariscal (New City) and the Old City is straightforward: the Ecov—a trolleybus line connects them in about 15 minutes, taxis are inexpensive, and the distance is walkable for the fit (uphill from Old City to New City).
The altitude is the main physical adjustment challenge for visitors arriving from sea level — most people need 24?48 hours to acclimatise, and serious exertion (including vigorous dancing) should be moderated in the first day or two. Altitude medication (acetazolamide / Diamox) can be prescribed by a travel health clinic before departure; coca tea and rest are the local recommendations.
