LEGAL CONTEXT - READ THIS FIRST

Ghana criminalises same-sex relations between men under Section 104 of the Criminal Offences Act (a misdemeanour carrying up to three years). The notorious "Family Values" bill passed by Parliament in 2024 lapsed when the President left office without signing it, but a reintroduced version passed Parliament on 29 May 2026 and was awaiting the President's signature at the time of writing - it would dramatically increase penalties and criminalise "promotion" and allyship. Treat the climate as hostile and getting harsher: arrests, blackmail, outing campaigns and mob violence against queer Ghanaians are documented, and the 2021 raid on the LGBT+ Rights Ghana centre showed that even community spaces are not safe.

NO SCENE, NO LISTS

Accra has no gay bars, clubs, saunas or Pride, and we deliberately name no venues, hotels, guesthouses, beaches or "private parties" as LGBTQ+-friendly: in a criminalising country such lists endanger everyone they touch. Do not use Grindr or any dating app in Ghana - fake profiles and WhatsApp groups are used to lure, beat, film and blackmail men, and the police are not a safe recourse. Keep intimate photos and apps off your phone, keep your private life entirely private, and never go to a private address or bring someone you have just met to your room.

WHAT A VISITOR CAN SAFELY ENJOY

Accra rewards ordinary travel. Walk Jamestown's faded colonial streets and lighthouse with a local guide, pay your respects at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the W. E. B. Du Bois Centre, and brave the glorious chaos of Makola Market by day with nothing valuable in your pockets. Eat well: jollof rice, waakye, kelewele (spiced fried plantain), banku with grilled tilapia at the roadside, and fresh coconuts everywhere. Labadi Beach is the busy city beach (there is an entry fee); Kokrobite, up the coast, is a relaxed surf-and-reggae weekend spot - go for the music and the sea, nothing else. Osu's Oxford Street is the lively shopping-and-nightlife strip; its mainstream bars and clubs are exactly that, mainstream, and should be enjoyed as any traveller would, with full discretion.

PRACTICAL TIPS

The currency is the cedi; carry cash for markets and taxis, and use cards in hotels and malls. Use Uber, Yango or Bolt rather than hailing taxis. Large international hotels are the practical choice: book a double, state your bed preference, explain nothing. Police checkpoints are routine - carry ID. Emergency: police 191, ambulance 193. The US Embassy in Accra answers +233 30 274 1000; the UK Foreign Office in London answers 24 hours on +44 20 7008 5000. If you are detained, ask for your embassy and a lawyer at once and sign nothing you do not understand. If someone threatens to expose you, stop contact, keep the evidence and call your embassy before paying anything.

THE HONEST ASSESSMENT

Accra is warm, musical and endlessly sociable, and a discreet traveller can enjoy it the way any traveller does. But there is no safe way to look for queer life here, and with a harsher law on the President's desk in 2026, this page will not pretend otherwise. If you want a trip where you can be yourself, South Africa - Cape Town or Johannesburg - is the continent's open option.
