Skuggi Hotel by Keahotels

I was on the top floor of the hotel which means I had a door to use to walk on to a small patio. It was lovely to take in the city from above. I appreciated the hotel garage where I could park. The front desk staff were very thorough and helpful.

Hotel itself is average, but there is underground parking which boosts this to 4*. There are a limited number of spaces and parking is TIGHT, so keep this in mind. Breakfast, theres no hot food other than porridge, again nothing special.

I honestly don’t understand how this hotel justifies charging around $340 per night. The best way I can describe Skuggi Hótel is that it feels like an Airbnb that somehow got promoted to a hotel without adding any of the things that make hotels worth paying for. The rooms are cramped, the only toiletry provided was a generic body wash, and there wasn’t even shampoo or conditioner. For the price, I expected at least the basics. The parking situation was also frustrating. The garage fills up, and once it’s full, you’re pretty much on your own. For a hotel in Reykjavík charging premium rates, I’d expect a better solution than “good luck.” That was also the staff’s response, cut us off and gestured broadly “you just drive around.” Thanks. Cheers mate, ideal. The lobby is surprisingly bare. Outside of breakfast hours, there’s essentially nothing available. No complimentary coffee. The staff weren’t rude, but they weren’t welcoming either. Every interaction felt transactional rather than hospitable. What really highlighted the shortcomings was that we stayed at Hotel Eyja immediately before coming here. The difference was night and day. Hotel Eyja felt warm, comfortable, and guest friendly. Skuggi feels like they are trying to see how little they can provide while still charging hotel prices. Overall, Skuggi wasn’t terrible, but it was one of the worst values we’ve encountered in Iceland. There are better options in Reykjavík for the same price or less. Like a lot less.

Nice little hotel. Offers everything you need and a little bit more. Centrally located. Underground parking.

Edit: I would categorize this as a 2 star hotel and the price does not match the product. Staff not personable/helpful, very basic amenities, research parking beforehand. Still at the hotel but would leave for a different hotel or Airbnb even if able and so cannot recommend. Not enough parking, no signage, and lack of friendliness/help from the front desk for recommendations. They appeared to know nothing about the parking lot that is around the hotel. We arrived around 11pm and pulled into the hotel driveway, which leads to both city parking and the hotel garage. We parked to go check in and then move the car. Staff told us the hotel lot was full. That’s fine, recommendations on where to park? Couldn’t be bothered. So at 11pm at night we spent the next 20 minutes researching how to park in the city using the zones. We also played a fun game of get the car out of the lot before the grace period expired whilst checking in. What’s the grace period? Staff had no clue.

I never like to write these reviews, but as you can see from my profile, I'm a highly rated reviewer on the Google review network. I'm also a Yelp elite, so in terms of credibility I feel that I'm pretty high... at least for American tastes. I always start these with the positives. - prime central location, 15-20 minutes to top city attractions - well appointed free breakfast - a parking garage with limited spaces, but if you get one, you'll you'll be chuffed And now, the many negatives... This is an eco friendly hotel, and frankly that's not a great thing. With regards to value for money and experience. - very small room, our two twin bed room was smaller than a room you would find on a cruise ship - The room lighting is atrocious, the lights are lights you would find in an Ikea. The bathroom lighting was dim to a fault. - bathroom amenities severely, we only got body wash dispensers, no body lotion, shampoo, etc. The bathroom itself was incredibly small and the sink space was ridiculously lacking. Uncomfortable toilet seats and small shower space. The Kleenex in the bathtub had the consistency of sandpaper. - The shower, water pressure and temperature were much too low, a NATO sub has stronger water pressure and higher temperature... - The twin beds were small, I imagine they're the size you would get in a college dorm. Only one nightstand for two beds...! - why aren't there any USB power outlets? - Our room faced the back parking lot and there was a good amount of noise coming from construction back there and cars entry - why does our door sound alarm when we leave?! - Staff were efficient, but not personable I'm not sure what the rating for this property was as Expedia had it at three stars, and an eight rating by guests. To quote Simon Cowell, if I'm being honest, this is a two-star property and the five guest rating. It felt more like an upscale hostel.

The location was great; we arrived in the late afternoon and had plenty of time to see all the "important" sights on foot. The room, with its small corner window, was a bit dark, and the dark-painted ceiling made it feel even darker. It felt a little oppressive and uncomfortable. The bathroom was spacious and clean. Although we had booked with parking, there wasn't a space available at first. But the friendly lady at reception simply assigned us a spot in the underground garage near the wall. It was only for one day, after all. Breakfast was quite good, and we were even allowed to refill our coffee mugs the next day. Thanks!
