Wreck Beach is a beautiful and relaxing spot — surrounded by nature and with a stunning ocean view. It’s known for its naturism, but everyone feels comfortable; taking your clothes off is totally optional. During the week, the beach is calm and quiet, perfect for a peaceful escape from the city. And the sunset here is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen — truly magical.

Described by UBC as Vancouver’s “legendary clothing-optional beach,” Wreck Beach is certainly an interesting place. I’d been curious about it for a number of years and finally decided to check it out during my recent “UBC day” adventure. Unbeknownst to me, the hike down to Wreck Beach turned out to be quite the workout! Once you reach Trail #6 – as part of Pacific Spirit Regional Park – it’s a long, steep walk down 490 stairs to the city’s nudist beach. This part, I admit, was pretty easy. Once at the beach, I was surprised at how quiet it was. Being early afternoon, I was anticipating a lot more bodies ambling about the beach, but activity was rather sparse. I spied a few sun-tanning nudists in the distance, but most other beachgoers kept their clothes on (including yours truly!). I felt this worked to my advantage since I wanted to be respectful of peoples’ space. As I wandered around Wreck Beach, it’s quite easy to see how and why it has such an appeal. Nudists aside, the beach offers beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and the sandy stretch of beach – in between two artificial jetties – makes for some good relaxation, sun-tanning and, indeed, contemplative reflection. In addition, because the beach isn’t totally accessible for everybody (those with mobility issues might have an issue getting here), the relative seclusion of Wreck Beach is certainly desirable – especially for those who don’t like swarms of people. And there is, of course, the recreational piece since this beach is part of the much larger Pacific Spirit Regional Park. Thus, while I wouldn’t say the beach is family friendly, the vibe is still one of relaxation and calm. After spending around 45 minutes at the beach, I decided to call it a day and continue my UBC-related explorations. Going back UP the 490 steps is what proved to be a challenge and workout! I confess I had to take a couple of breaks on the way back up! Note: An earlier review suggested that “some of the beach goers are beginning to disrespect the beach for what it once stood for, and remain clothed.” The statement is summarily false. Wreck Beach was never 100% nudist; it was always “clothing optional” dating all the way back to the “Dirty Thirties.” The nudist aspect wasn’t part of some hippie revolution. People came here, largely unclothed, simply because the cost of swimwear was too pricey for most during the Great Depression. And then this tradition stood and finally became legalized in 1991. No one is “disrespecting” anybody by showing up clothed.

478 vertical steps down from street parking. This beach has a beautiful sunset. Some days the water has mild waves, but often the water is calm. There are washed up logs used as seating. No showers or trash cans along the beach, only outhouses with toilets.

Lots of people chilling and having a picnic or stroll at all hours of the day! Parking is easy and there’s a long stretch to walk

on the campus grounds of the University of British Columbia, this beach is deserved by a descent and therefore the same ascent of more than 490 steps. nudist beach but there are more and more textiles stuck, voyeurism by education. Quasi-family beach where we find everything from skewers , tacos of all kinds, magic mushrooms, and everything else... super clean beach , toilet on the beach , beer vendors... pity that such a beautiful relaxing beach is damaged by some morons who to make themselves seen , compensating for the size of their burnes , come to pollute this beach by the noise and smell of gasoline from their boats or jet ski ... a sunset and drums...

We have been going to Wreck Beach for years and always enjoy our visits. On occasion there are extra special visits which are even more memorable. Please respect others privacy, no photos or videos. Also please take your garbage out with you.

This beach is amazing, however due to more recent popularity some of the beach goers are beginning to disrespect the beach for what it once stood for, and remain clothed. Which to me doesn't really make sense given its a perfect place to do this; hopefully in a judgment free way. So if you do visit, shed the layers and gain a new sense of confidence.

Unique place to visit being the only nude beach in the lower mainland and right on the site of the largest university in the province. Great atmosphere till the cops roll around to kick people off the beach at 10pm. Otherwise, if you got time or around UBC looking for somewhere to lounge around with or without clothes, this is the spot.

There are too many people with cameras and iphones taking pictures of nude people on the beach. Never take pictures of people there should be the mantra. I have seen a tall white guy and short white lady taking pics today of nudists, always tell people to put their cameras and iphone away if they are aiming at nudists.

Vancouver's Secret Beach. Wreck Beach is a wonderful quite secluded Beach away from most tourists. You have to be fit to go up and down a very long staircase cut into the side of the embankment. The water can be quite warm..

In terms of beach experience, I bit overhyped IMO. Beach is rocky, water is freezing, and the views get better as you walk to the north.

It’s gorgeous here. It’s so delightful to be able to lose the conservative shackles that are placed on your body. Plus, it’s a super nice environment. The people are nice, and, in my experience, it’s very laidback and low pressure. Highly recommend going here if you’re into naturism, or just wanna go to a nice beach and don’t mind seeing some naked people.

Beautiful Beach ruined by a few men patrolling in groups of 3-5, at times even bigger groups. It feels judgy and weird, plus they talk about other people and insulting them in another language, it's quite obvious based on context and behavior patterns. Also these men never undresses they just stare at those who do, especially to those that look similar to them that actively participate in the culture. It's one thing to come as a group and stay clothed, it's a whole nother thing to stare and make people feel uncomfortable especially when your crew won't undress.

Worth the lengthy hike down and the beautiful nature on the way for this calm beach spot. Enjoyed the sunset here, and lots of other people gathered too at that time to relax. Great spot, got these great pictures, saw many many seals. This place is clothing optional, so definitely don’t come if that’s of bother to you because there were definitely some people partaking.

Visiting Wreck Beach feels completely different from visiting most beaches in Vancouver. It is not just a place to swim or sunbathe. The entire experience feels almost disconnected from the rest of the city in a strange but memorable way. The moment you begin walking down the long staircase surrounded by forest, it already feels like you are leaving behind traffic, noise, work stress, and the constant pressure of city life. By the time you reach the beach itself, the atmosphere changes completely. One thing that immediately stands out about Wreck Beach is how natural and unfiltered it feels. Unlike heavily commercialized beaches filled with loud restaurants, giant signs, and endless concrete, this place still feels wild and free. The beach stretches beautifully along the water with views of the ocean, mountains, and open sky that honestly make it one of the most scenic places in Vancouver. On a clear day, the view feels massive and peaceful at the same time. The sound of waves, the fresh ocean air, and the calm rhythm of people relaxing create an atmosphere that feels almost timeless. Of course, Wreck Beach is also famous for being clothing-optional, which gives the place its unique identity. At first, some people might feel nervous or surprised if they are visiting for the first time, but after a while it honestly just becomes normal. The atmosphere feels much less judgmental than many public spaces. People are there simply to relax, enjoy nature, and be comfortable. After a few minutes, your brain stops caring because you realize nobody else really cares either. Human beings are weirdly good at adapting. One minute you are thinking, “This is unusual,” and twenty minutes later you are casually eating snacks while someone walks by carrying a surfboard and absolutely no pants. What I appreciated most was the feeling of freedom and authenticity the beach gives off. People seemed relaxed and genuinely present instead of constantly performing for social media. Some were reading books, others playing music quietly, swimming, tanning, or simply lying in the sun listening to the waves. The environment felt surprisingly peaceful despite the beach being popular. It had this unspoken understanding where everyone respected the space and each other. The journey back up the stairs afterward is honestly the real workout. Going down feels easy because gravity becomes your best friend. Going back up is where your legs suddenly begin questioning your life decisions. Still, even that becomes part of the experience. By the time you reach the top again, slightly exhausted and out of breath, it oddly feels rewarding. Wreck Beach also represents something rare in modern cities: a place that still feels independent, unconventional, and connected to nature instead of fully commercialized. Vancouver sometimes struggles between being a beautiful nature city and an expensive polished urban machine, and Wreck Beach feels like one of the places still resisting that pressure. Overall, Wreck Beach is more than just a beach. It is an experience that combines nature, freedom, relaxation, and a different kind of social atmosphere that you do not often find elsewhere. Whether you visit for the scenery, the peaceful environment, or simple curiosity, it leaves a lasting impression. It is one of Vancouver’s most unique places, and honestly, part of its charm is that it refuses to be ordinary.

A pleasant beach with tree trunks serving as backrests or seats. Stunning sunset views. However, there are 476 steps to descend to get there and... climb back up!
