The honest summary: Osaka has no gay hotels. What it has is a compact gay district, Doyama-cho, right next to the city's biggest transport hub, so the useful question is not "which hotel is gay" but "which hotel lets me walk home from Doyama after the last train". Everything below is a mainstream hotel. Same-sex couples sharing a room is routine at Japanese hotels.
Legal in one line: same-sex relations are legal in Japan and Osaka City and Prefecture issue partnership certificates, but there is no same-sex marriage.
Where to stay
Umeda and Higashi-Umeda (Kita) is the obvious base: Doyama-cho is a five-to-fifteen-minute walk from Osaka and Umeda stations, and the Haruka from Kansai International Airport stops at Osaka Station. Namba and Shinsaibashi (Minami) suit you if you care more about food and shopping; the southern drag and gay bars are there, and Doyama is ten minutes north on the Midosuji Line, but you will need a taxi after midnight.
Close to Doyama
- Osaka Tokyu REI Hotel, 2-1 Doyama-cho: a big business hotel on the western edge of the district itself. Compact, dated rooms, but you cannot get closer.
- TONES OSAKA, 7-13 Doyama-cho: a small hotel inside the Doyama grid, rated 4.6 by Google reviewers.
- UMEDAHOLIC HOTEL, 5-2 Togano-cho: mid-range, with a cafe-bar and laundry, a few minutes north-east of Doyama.
- hotel atarayo osaka, 6-23 Matsugae-cho: a hostel-style budget option east of Doyama, towards Ogimachi.
- Capsule Hotel Daitoyo, Nakazaki-nishi: a men's capsule hotel with a public bath, a short walk north of the district. It is a mainstream capsule hotel, not a gay sauna.
- Hilton Osaka, 1-8-8 Umeda: the full-service option opposite JR Osaka Station, with a gym and pool, about ten to fifteen minutes' walk from Doyama.
- HOTEL Cargo Shinsaibashi, Bakuro-machi: a design capsule hotel, handy for Shinsaibashi and Namba.
- &And Hostel Hommachi East, Tokiwa-machi: a hostel with dorms and private rooms between Kita and Minami, on the Chuo and Tanimachi lines.
- Capsule hotels are often men-only or have separate floors by gender; check before booking as a couple, and expect no double beds.
- Love hotels around Doyama and Togano-cho rent rooms by the hour or night. Many accept male couples, but some still refuse them, so ask at the desk.
- Gay saunas such as Daikichi offer an overnight rate that some visitors use as a cheap bed; see our Osaka saunas guide for the house rules first.
- Pride weekend: Rainbow Festa! in Ogimachi Park each October fills Umeda-area hotels; book early.
