The honest summary: Namur is the capital of Wallonia, a French-speaking city of about 115,000 people where the Sambre meets the Meuse, under a huge citadel. It has no gay bar, club or sauna. Its queer life is real, but it's run by associations rather than businesses: a busy rainbow house, a volunteer Pride group that throws free tea dances, and a student circle. For a gay bar crawl, Brussels is an hour away by train.

Legal in one line

Belgium legalised same-sex marriage in 2003 (the second country in the world to do so) and joint adoption in 2006. Since 2018, trans people can change their legal gender by self-declaration. Anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity, and conversion practices have been banned since 2023. Holding hands in Namur's old town won't get a second look.

The scene: associations, not bars

We checked Travel Gay, misterb&b, the Walloon LGBTQ+ federation (Prisme), the local press (L'Avenir, DH) and Google Maps in French and English. None of them lists an operating gay bar in Namur in 2026. The DH ran a piece in 2016 headlined "Les gays namurois vivent cachés" (Namur's gays live hidden). It's an older article, but it explains the gap: the last gay bar, Baby Boy's, had already closed. The scene has since rebuilt itself around a few places.

Maison Arc-en-Ciel de Namur (Rue Eugène Hambursin 13): the province's LGBTQIA+ community centre and the umbrella for about 15 associations. According to its website, there's an open drop-in on Tuesdays from 13:00 to 18:00, and on other weekdays you can visit from 10:00 to 15:00 by appointment. Groups that meet there include Activ'elles (lesbian sport and leisure), a trans peer group, Genres Pluriels, Café Poly, QueerGEEK and Queer Bubble, which serves a vegan meal at the Tuesday drop-in. The centre also has the city's only regular free HIV/STI testing: Ex Aequo runs anonymous rapid tests there on the second Wednesday of each month, 16:00 to 20:00, by appointment.

Les Fiertés Namuroises: the volunteer group behind Pride. Between Prides, it runs most of Namur's queer nights out, and its events are free. The Tea Dance des Fiertés runs about every two months on a Sunday, 17:00 to 23:00, at Château d'Amée in Jambes. The next one is the "Soirée royale" on 15 November 2026. The group also holds an after-work apéro at the rainbow house on the second Friday of the month and a year-end gala.

Chez Marsha (Rue de l'Arsenal 5A): the University of Namur's LGBTQIA+ student circle. It opens on Wednesday evenings from 18:00 to midnight during the academic year. It's a student bar room, so it's young and cheap.

Nana Bar Namurois (Rue du Beffroi 14): a mainstream bar by the belfry and the nearest thing Namur has to a queer bar. In 2024 the owners launched a monthly drag bingo with the drag queen Angel Hyperteck. In May 2026 the bar hosted the official Pride after-party. We couldn't confirm whether the bingo still runs every month, so check the bar's socials before you go.

The main going-out square is Place du Marché aux Légumes, known locally as the Place du Vieux, along with the streets around it. It's mixed and mostly student-driven, and same-sex couples are part of the crowd without anyone making a point of it.

Saunas and cruising

Namur has no gay sauna, and neither does the rest of the province. Listings that call a mobile sauna-rental firm in Gembloux or a beauty salon near Charleroi "gay saunas" are wrong. The nearest gay saunas are in Brussels. No current source names a cruising area in Namur, and we don't list one.

Closed or changed / gone but still Googled

Baby Boy's Bar, once Namur's only gay bar, had closed by 2016. A small gay bar on Rue des Brasseurs closed before that, and the "mini Marais" once planned for that street never happened. GayFunParty at the Oze-Club in Ohey was last advertised in 2018 and isn't in Namur anyway. Yelp's "gay bars in Namur" results are Brussels venues (La Démence, Strange and others) placed in the wrong city.

Pride and events

Namur Pride, the Journée des Fiertés, takes place in late May on Place Maurice Servais. It's free, with an associations village, stage shows and, since 2024, a march through the old town. Past dates were 25 May 2024 and 24 May 2025. In 2026 it was the 15th edition, with a week of events from 26 to 30 May and the main day on Saturday 30 May. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing.

Brussels Pride is about two weeks earlier, in mid-May (16 May in 2026, its 30th edition). Charleroi's Pride, Les Fiertés Carolos, is at the end of August.

Namur's big mainstream events are worth timing a visit around, too. Namur en Mai is a street-arts festival in mid-May. The Fêtes de Wallonie in mid-September (17–21 September in 2026) bring free concerts and stilt jousting. The FIFF francophone film festival runs from late September into early October, and the KIKK digital-arts festival is in late October.

Getting there and around

Direct intercity trains reach Namur from Brussels in about an hour, from Liège in about 45 minutes and from Charleroi in about half an hour. The nearest airport is Brussels South Charleroi (CRL). From there, take the TEC bus to Charleroi-Sud and then the train; a combined ticket is sold at the airport. From Brussels Airport (BRU), take the train from the station under the terminal and change at Brussels-North. The old town is compact and walkable from the station. A cable car runs from the Grognon, at the confluence, up to the citadel.

Where to stay

There are no LGBTQ+-run hotels in Namur. The hotels we list are mainstream, and Belgian law forbids refusing a same-sex couple a double room. Hotel Les Tanneurs is in the old town in joined 17th-century houses. The B&B Hotel, the ibis and the Grand Hôtel de Flandre are close to the station. Villa Balat is a small B&B on the Jambes bank of the Meuse, facing the citadel. For a pool and spa, The Royal Snail and Mercure are on the river at La Plante, and Ne5t is up on the citadel plateau.

What to do

Walk up to the citadel, one of the largest in Europe, or take the cable car, then come down through the old town to Place d'Armes and the belfry. The Félicien Rops Museum is dedicated to the Namur-born Symbolist artist, whose erotic etchings still raise eyebrows. Jambes, across the Meuse, is quieter and residential, with parks and Château d'Amée. Wépion, just upriver, is famous for its strawberries.
