The honest summary: Pirna has no gay bar, no gay club and no gay sauna, and nobody here pretends otherwise. What it does have is a stubborn, well-organised queer association, CSD Pirna e.V., which runs a Christopher Street Day on the Marktplatz every July and keeps a small meeting and advice room in the old town. For a night out you go to Dresden, 20 to 25 minutes away on the S1. Come for the old town, the Elbe and Saxon Switzerland; come in July if you want to see local queer life at its most visible.
Legal in one line
Germany has had same-sex marriage, with joint adoption, since 1 October 2017. The old § 175 was repealed in 1994. Since 1 November 2024 the Selbstbestimmungsgesetz lets adults change their legal gender and first name by declaration at the registry office. Conversion therapy on minors has been banned since 2020, and courts must treat hatred based on sexual orientation as an aggravating motive. The age of consent is 14, with extra protection up to 16 and 18.
The town in brief
Pirna is a district town of about 39,000 people on the Elbe, just upriver from Dresden and at the gateway to the sandstone hills of Saxon Switzerland. The Altstadt lies on the left (south-west) bank of the river. Its centre is the Marktplatz with the Renaissance town hall, the late-Gothic Marienkirche and the townhouses that Bernardo Bellotto (Canaletto) painted in the 1750s. Schloss Sonnenstein sits on the rock spur directly above the old town. In 1940 and 1941 the Nazis used it as a killing centre for people with disabilities and the sick; the memorial there is worth an hour of your time.
Pirna also has a piece of queer history in the pavement. A Stolperstein lies in front of Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 9 for the musician Arthur Pautzsch, who was convicted of "Unzucht mit Männern" under § 175, sent through several camps and murdered in Sachsenhausen on 4 April 1941. It is the fourth Stolperstein in Pirna, and CSD Pirna e.V. marked its laying.
Queer life in Pirna: CSD Pirna e.V. and Q43
CSD Pirna e.V. describes itself as working for the whole Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district. Its QueerTreff Pirna, known as Q43, is at Lange Straße 43 in the old town. The association's site describes it as a safe room for people of all identities, with get-togethers, workshops, support for families and friends, and counselling: Gerede e.V. Dresden uses the rooms for trans counselling and Aids-Hilfe Dresden for HIV advice. There are no published public opening hours, so contact the association (csd-pirna.de, +49 3501 5009929) before you turn up.
Beyond Q43 we found no regular queer party, bar night or social group in Pirna itself, and no queer youth group. Gay venue guides covering the region (misterb&b, saunas4men) list only Dresden.
Bars and nightlife
There are none that are gay or queer. Earlier versions of this page and several automated listings presented ordinary old-town pubs and cocktail bars as gay-friendly. We found no evidence for that and have removed them. Pirna's bars are small, local and fine for a drink, but they are not a scene.
Saunas and bathing
Pirna has no gay sauna. The Geibeltbad is a regular public pool and sauna complex. The Kies- und Badesee Birkwitz, a former gravel pit on the town's north-western edge, is a public bathing lake where nude (FKK) and clothed bathers share the water, according to seen.de. Older online listings described it as a gay spot. We couldn't confirm that in any current guide or forum, so treat it as an ordinary FKK lake. Sex in public places is an offence in Germany.
Dresden for the evening
Dresden is the region's scene, and from Pirna it is closer than many suburbs are to their city centres. The S1 runs to Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Dresden-Neustadt roughly every 30 minutes. The Neustadt, north of the river, has Boys Bar on Alaunstraße and several of the city's other gay and queer bars, and Paradise on Friedensstraße is Dresden's gay sauna. Check the last train back before you settle in; after midnight the service thins out.
Pride and events
CSD Pirna has been held on the Marktplatz each July:
- 13 July 2024: federal queer commissioner Sven Lehmann spoke of "several thousand" participants, the biggest such event in Pirna so far. Police recorded no offences, though participants reported insults on the way in. CSD Leipzig gave its 2024 award to CSD Pirna.
- 12 July 2025: the 14th CSD Pirna. Saxony's domestic intelligence service recorded three far-right counter-gatherings in town that day, about 270 people in total.
- 11 July 2026: the 15th edition, motto "LAUT FÜR ALLE, die leise sein müssen". Police expected a calm day, and the intelligence service's July report lists no counter-event in Pirna.
The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing. Recent editions fell on the second Saturday of July. CSD Dresden is the bigger regional Pride; its 2026 parade was on 6 June.
Safety and the local mood
Pirna is safe to visit as a queer traveller, and the old town in daytime is a tourist place like any other. The honest context is political. In December 2023 Pirna elected Tim Lochner, an independent nominated by the AfD, as mayor; he was widely reported as the first AfD-nominated Oberbürgermeister in Germany. In 2024 he refused to fly the rainbow flag at the town hall for 17 May, saying the CSD was political; the Protestant parish flew it at the Marienkirche instead, and a deleted post of his comparing that to swastika flags led to a threat against the pastor and a criminal complaint. Far-right groups are visible in the region, as the 2025 counter-protests showed.
None of this means trouble in the street is likely, and we found no report of physical attacks on CSD participants. It does mean that out in the villages and late at night, low-key is sensible, and that CSD day itself is well policed.
Practical tips
- Getting there: the S1 links Pirna with Dresden, Bad Schandau and the Czech border; Dresden Airport (DRS) is about 30 km away.
- Where to stay: the old town around the Marktplatz is the most convenient base, with the station a 10 to 15 minute walk away. All hotels in town are mainstream; same-sex couples book as anywhere in Germany.
- Hiking: Saxon Switzerland National Park starts upriver. Kurort Rathen, for the Bastei bridge, and Bad Schandau are a short train ride on the S1.
- Health: Aids-Hilfe Dresden offers HIV and STI testing and advice; ask CSD Pirna e.V. about the counselling dates at Q43.
A few words
- schwul / lesbisch / queer: gay / lesbian / queer
- Wo ist der Marktplatz?: Where is the market square?
- Zwei Fahrkarten nach Dresden, bitte: Two tickets to Dresden, please
- Wir sind ein Paar: We're a couple
Yes, for visitors. Germany has marriage equality and strong anti-discrimination law, and Pirna's old town is an ordinary tourist area. The political mood is more conservative than in Dresden: the town elected an AfD-nominated mayor in 2023, he refused to fly the rainbow flag in 2024, and far-right groups held counter-gatherings at the 2025 CSD. We found no reports of physical attacks; keep a low profile in outlying villages late at night.
Small and community-run. There are no commercial gay venues. The local association CSD Pirna e.V. runs the QueerTreff Q43 at Lange Straße 43, a meeting and counselling room, and organises CSD Pirna on the Marktplatz each July. Most people go to Dresden for nightlife.
In Dresden, 20 to 25 minutes away on the S1. The Neustadt has Boys Bar on Alaunstraße and other gay and queer bars, and Paradise on Friedensstraße is Dresden's gay sauna. Check the last train back to Pirna before you head out.
Only one: the QueerTreff Q43 run by CSD Pirna e.V. at Lange Straße 43. It is a meeting and advice space, not a bar, and public opening hours are not published, so contact the association first. Gerede e.V. Dresden (trans counselling) and Aids-Hilfe Dresden (HIV advice) hold sessions there.
The Altstadt on the left bank of the Elbe is where almost everything is: the Marktplatz with the town hall and Marienkirche, Q43 on Lange Straße, and most hotels. Schloss Sonnenstein, now also a memorial to the victims of the Nazi euthanasia killings of 1940-41, sits on the rock above it. The station is a 10 to 15 minute walk west.
Yes, as long as you don't expect a scene. Pirna is a quiet, cheaper base than Dresden for Saxon Switzerland: the S1 reaches Kurort Rathen (for the Bastei) and Bad Schandau in under half an hour, and Dresden in 20 to 25 minutes. Time a visit for CSD Pirna in July if you want to meet local queer people.
