The honest summary: the Algarve is a beach region with a small gay scene, not a gay resort. Outside Albufeira, which has its own strip of gay bars, the region has two gay clubs, one in Faro and one in Portimão, a busy LGBTI+ community space in Faro, a gay naturist beach near Tavira and a Pride march in Faro every June. There are no gay saunas anywhere in the region. Most gay visitors combine beach days with a night or two out in Faro or Albufeira.
This page covers Faro and the rest of the Algarve: Tavira, Olhão, Loulé, Quarteira and Vilamoura, Portimão and the far east around Monte Gordo. Albufeira and Lagos have their own guides.
Legal in one line: Portugal decriminalised homosexuality in 1982 (in force from 1983), has had same-sex marriage since June 2010 and joint adoption since 2016, allows legal gender change by self-declaration since 2018 and banned conversion practices from March 2024.
Faro: the region's capital and its one gay club
Faro is where most visitors land, and the airport is only 4 to 7 km from the old town. Its gay nightlife is one club: Prestige Dance Club on Largo da Madalena, in the old centre near the marina. Travel Gay, misterb&b and QList all list it as an LGBTQ+ club, with a dance floor, pop and electronic music, and drag, go-go and themed nights on some weekends. It opens on Friday and Saturday only, from about 11pm until 4am or later. Madalena, the arts café next door, is where many people start the night. It's a mixed, gay-friendly café, not a gay bar.
Daytime queer life in Faro centres on Werk Room, an LGBTI+ community space on Rua do Compromisso. Its calendar runs film nights, game afternoons, a book club, workshops, support groups and parties, and its Guilherme Gonçalves Gallery shows local queer artists. Most events need registration through werkroom.pt. MAPS, a Faro NGO working on HIV and sexual health, is the other local group you're likely to come across.
Other Faro bars that turn up in older lists, including Columbus, Bohème, Espelho and Dream Bar, are mainstream places that are at most gay-friendly.
West of Faro, The Loft on Rua de Olivença in Portimão is the only gay venue in town and the only one between Albufeira and the west coast. Travel Gay calls it a gay dance club, and misterb&b also lists it under its old name, Loft by Pride. It holds around 150 people and runs karaoke, shows and the odd foam party. Google lists it as open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 11pm to 4am. It's the obvious night out if you're staying in Lagos, Alvor or Praia da Rocha.
Albufeira, briefly
Albufeira has the Algarve's only cluster of gay bars, around Avenida Sá Carneiro in the Areias de São João area, not in the old town. Connection Bar and Dark by Nude, which misterb&b describes as the only cruising bar in the Algarve, are there. See our Albufeira guide for details. Kiss Club in Albufeira, which older pages listed as hosting gay nights, is a mainstream nightclub.
Beaches
The Algarve has three official naturist beaches, and two of them are in this area. Praia do Homem Nu, on the Ilha de Tavira barrier island next to Praia do Barril, was designated in 2004 and has long been popular with gay men as well as naturist couples. Time Out Portugal and Lonely Planet both describe it. There are no facilities, so bring water and shade; the cafés are at Praia do Barril. Ilha Deserta, the sand island in the Ria Formosa off Faro, has had an official naturist section since 2011. Its crowd is mixed naturist rather than gay, and you can only get there by boat from Faro.
Other beaches come up in gay travel writing. Travel Gay has called Cacela Velha, on the Ria Formosa near the Spanish border, one of Portugal's best gay beaches. User-submitted lists on PortugalGay.pt name the western end of Praia de Faro towards Quinta do Lago, Praia do Loulé Velho near Quarteira, the coves west of Praia do Alemão in Portimão, and Monte Gordo and Manta Rota in the east. We couldn't confirm any of these with a second source, so treat them as hearsay. Praia da Falésia is a long, popular family beach, not a gay beach, whatever some older pages say.
Nudity is legal only on designated naturist beaches. Public sex is illegal everywhere in Portugal, beaches and dunes included. We don't publish meeting points or times for outdoor spots.
There is no gay sauna in the Algarve. Thermas Pride in Albufeira still appears in old directories, but we found no sign that it is open. The nearest gay saunas are in Lisbon, about two and a half to three hours north by car or train.
Pride and events
The Marcha do Orgulho LGBTQI+ do Algarve (MOA) has been held in Faro since 2018. It's a community march run by local groups, not a tourist festival. The 6th edition took place on Saturday 20 June 2026, organised by APF Algarve, MAPS Algarve, TransParente, Werk Room Faro and Associação Xis: a gathering at the Liceu de Faro, a march down Avenida 5 de Outubro and a free party at Fábrica da Cerveja. We found no 2025 edition. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing. Follow @marchalgbtqialgarve.
European Summer Pride is a commercial LGBTQ+ beach week in Faro run by the team behind European Snow Pride. Its first edition was scheduled for 26 September to 3 October 2026, with beach days, catamaran after-beach parties, cabaret dinners and club nights, sold as a week pass. 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked.
Werk Room's calendar is the most reliable source of smaller queer events in Faro through the year.
Where to stay
Casa Amêndoa, in the countryside near Tunes about 10 minutes north of Albufeira, is a gay men-only, clothing-optional guesthouse; you'll need a car. In Faro's old town, Casa Apollo is an adults-only guesthouse with a heated pool that describes itself as gay-friendly, and it's walkable to Prestige. Quinta da Liberdade is a set of rural cottages in Pechão, near Olhão, about 15 minutes from Faro by car. On the coast, Dom José Beach Hotel sits on the Quarteira seafront, and Falésia Hotel and Grande Real Santa Eulália are large mainstream resorts near Albufeira. These are mainstream hotels that we list as gay-friendly, not gay hotels.
Thermas Pride (Albufeira): listed as a gay sauna in old directories, with no sign of life in recent years.
"Algarve Gay Guide" sauna in Portimão: a travel blog that some listings mistook for a sauna. There is no sauna.
Kiss Club (Albufeira): a mainstream nightclub, not a gay venue.
"The Lab" (Monte Gordo) and "Luisol Bar" (Faro): each appears on a single website, and we found no other trace of either.
"Albufeira Old Town is the gay hub": it isn't. Albufeira's gay bars are around Avenida Sá Carneiro.
Practical tips
Faro Airport (FAO) is 4 to 7 km from Faro's centre. Albufeira is about 40 minutes away by road, Tavira about 35 minutes and Lagos about an hour on the A22.
Nightlife is very seasonal. Prestige and The Loft open only a few nights a week, and in winter the region is quiet.
Trains on the Algarve line link Lagos, Portimão, Tunes, Albufeira (the station is outside town), Faro, Olhão and Tavira. A car makes the beaches and rural stays much easier.
Boats to Ilha Deserta leave from Faro's Cais das Portas do Mar. For Praia do Homem Nu, cross to Praia do Barril from Pedras d'El Rei.
Portugal is one of Europe's safest countries for LGBTQ+ travellers. Small inland villages are more conservative than the coast, but open hostility is rare.

It's small and spread out. Faro has one gay club, Prestige Dance Club, and the Werk Room community space. Portimão has The Loft. Albufeira has the region's only cluster of gay bars, around Avenida Sá Carneiro rather than in the old town. Tavira, Olhão, Vilamoura and Monte Gordo have no gay venues.

The Marcha do Orgulho LGBTQI+ do Algarve (MOA) is held in Faro in June. The 2026 edition was on 20 June, with a march down Avenida 5 de Outubro and a free party afterwards. The 2027 date hadn't been announced in October 2026. Separately, European Summer Pride, a commercial beach week, ran its first edition in Faro in late September 2026.
Prestige in Faro opens on Friday and Saturday from about 11pm until 4am or later. The Loft in Portimão is listed as open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 11pm to 4am. Both change hours in summer, so check their Facebook pages first.
Yes, generally. Portugal has had same-sex marriage since 2010, adoption rights since 2016, self-declared legal gender change since 2018 and a ban on conversion practices since 2024. The coast is used to international visitors. Some inland villages are more conservative, but open hostility is rare.
