On April 22, 2024, Dominica's High Court struck down sections 14 and 16 of the Sexual Offences Act. That's the colonial-era ban on same-sex relations. The case was brought by Minority Rights Dominica (MiRiDom), making Dominica the sixth former British Caribbean nation to decriminalize through its courts.

This change is very fresh: society here remains tightly Christian-conservative. The law still doesn't explicitly protect against discrimination in work or services. The key to an easy trip: discretion in public, and no public affection outside the resorts.

Dominica calls itself the Nature Island, and for good reason. It runs on eco-tourism — mountain treks, hot springs, great diving. Not parties. There are no gay bars or commercial clubs. The local scene amounts to MiRiDom and private networks. International resorts and boutique hotels, though, offer cosmopolitan, discreet, and fully welcoming hospitality to queer couples.

Fort Young Hotel, on the Roseau waterfront, is the capital's cosmopolitan anchor. Its seafront terrace and bar are the safest, easiest meeting point in town. Business travelers, diplomats, expats, and tourists all cross paths there. Secret Bay, near Portsmouth, is an ultra-luxury villa resort. It's ranked among the Caribbean's finest: total privacy, top-tier service, and explicit non-discrimination. Jungle Bay Dominica, in Soufrière, is the famed eco-resort on the hillside above the Scotts Head marine reserve. It's known for its open, patient atmosphere, yoga, spa, and warmth to couples. Pagua Bay House, at Marigot on the Atlantic coast, does chic modern boutique with an intimate, informal, inclusive feel. Ti Kwen Glo Cho, in Wotten Waven village, is a jungle hot-springs compound and bar where tourists and locals soak together in mineral pools. It's relaxed, mixed, and welcoming. For a calm cultural daytime spot downtown, try the Dominica Museum & Botanical Gardens café in Roseau.

The island breaks into three zones. Roseau is the administrative capital, busy by day, sleepy by night. The pier area and the Fort Young terrace are the safest, most open evening corner. Soufrière & Wotten Waven, in the south, make up the eco-lodge belt: hot springs, Champagne Reef's diving, and secluded resorts. It's the most liberal, relaxed base on the island. Portsmouth and the north are quiet and remote, anchored by Secret Bay's full-privacy luxury.

The digital scene is very thin and very discreet. Most local profiles carry no face photo. That's a product of how close family and community sit on a small island. The cardinal rules: never screenshot or forward a local profile, and turn off exact-distance display. The community's real address is MiRiDom, led by Daryl Phillip. It's provided advocacy, legal aid, and support for the local community since 2012, and it's the group that won the 2024 ruling.

A perfect Dominica day? Morning: swimming and diving among Champagne Reef's geothermal bubbles. Midday: a light lunch and a wander through Roseau's Botanical Gardens. Afternoon: a long soak in Ti Kwen Glo Cho's natural hot pools in Wotten Waven. Sunset and evening: cocktails and fresh fish on the water at the Fort Young terrace.

The Boiling Lake hike, Trafalgar Falls, and whale-watching that actually delivers fill the rest of the itinerary. Keep affection for the lodges (several are foreign-owned and effortlessly welcoming). Support MiRiDom if you can. And know that since April 2024, the law is finally on your side — even if the culture takes its time.
