Asbury Park's LGBTQ+ history is deeply intertwined with the city's broader cultural evolution. Founded in 1874 as a Methodist resort town, Asbury Park grew into a popular boardwalk destination through the 20th century. Beginning in the 1980s and 1990s, as the city experienced economic decline, LGBTQ+ residents, artists and business owners were drawn to its affordable real estate and bohemian character. The gay-nightlife lineage runs deep here: legendary venues such as Down the Street (New Jersey's longest-running gay disco until it closed in 1999) and Anybody's helped define the scene before waterfront redevelopment reshaped the town. By the early 2000s Asbury Park had firmly re-established itself as one of the Jersey Shore's most welcoming destinations, a reputation strengthened by continued investment in dining, entertainment and hospitality.
Neighborhoods
Downtown Asbury Park, centered on Cookman Avenue and Main Street, is the heart of the LGBTQ+ scene. This compact, walkable district holds most of the city's gay and gay-friendly bars, restaurants, shops and galleries, with colorful murals, independent businesses and a youthful creative energy. The waterfront and the renovated Asbury Park Boardwalk form a second hub, home to the Empress Hotel and Paradise as well as beachfront hotels and bars. The unofficial gay beach gathers at the north end of the beachfront, on the sand near Convention Hall around the 5th Avenue boardwalk entrance. Adjoining Asbury Park to the south is historic Ocean Grove, a Victorian community with a number of LGBTQ+-welcoming guesthouses.
Venues and Nightlife
Asbury Park has a small but storied dedicated gay scene anchored by two venues. Paradise, the town's flagship gay nightclub, sits poolside at the Empress Hotel at 101 Asbury Avenue; owned by producer Shep Pettibone, it features multiple dance rooms, a martini lounge, tiki bars and a heated pool, and is famous for its summer dance parties, tea dances, drag shows and the annual Miss Paradise pageant. Georgies, at 810 Fifth Avenue, is the neighborhood gay bar - a cash-only, seven-nights-a-week "gay Cheers" open since 1999, known for its Thursday drag show and karaoke nights.
Beyond the two dedicated venues, a number of gay-friendly spots round out the nightlife. Johnny Mac's Tap Room and the Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten on and near Cookman Avenue draw a mixed, welcoming crowd, while the Wonder Bar on Ocean Avenue and the rooftop bar at The Asbury hotel host DJ nights and events popular with LGBTQ+ visitors, especially in summer and during Pride weekend. The Stone Pony, the boardwalk's legendary rock club, is a mainstream music venue that occasionally programs LGBTQ+ and Pride-related shows.
Jersey Pride is New Jersey's statewide LGBTQ+ Pride - the oldest and largest in the state - and it has been held in Asbury Park since 1992. Produced by the all-volunteer nonprofit Jersey Pride, Inc., the celebration takes place on the first Sunday of June at Bradley Park along the waterfront, drawing tens of thousands of people for a march, live entertainment, community vendors and family programming (the 2027 edition is scheduled for Sunday, June 6). QFest, the LGBTQ+ film festival organized by the QSpot community center, screens independent and international queer cinema at venues around town. Additional themed dance nights and special events run through the summer, particularly at Paradise and along the boardwalk.
Community and Organizations
Asbury Park punches above its size for LGBTQ+ community infrastructure. The QSpot LGBTQ Community Center at 1601 Asbury Avenue offers support groups, recovery meetings, a buddy program for older adults and cultural programming including QFest. Garden State Equality, New Jersey's largest LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, established its statewide headquarters in Asbury Park at 308 Main Street, in the historic former Asbury Park & Ocean Grove Bank building. Together they make the city a hub for both community life and statewide activism.
Accommodation
Asbury Park offers accommodations from budget-friendly to upscale. The Empress Hotel on the boardwalk at 101 Asbury Avenue is the town's landmark gay hotel and the home of Paradise. The Asbury, a stylish boutique hotel a block from the beach, draws a strong LGBTQ+ crowd with its bar, pool, bowling alley and rooftop cinema, and the century-old Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel hosts Pride-weekend events. In adjoining Ocean Grove, Victorian guesthouses such as The Melrose and The Ocean View Inn offer welcoming, characterful stays. Many LGBTQ+ travelers favor these smaller, queer-owned inns for their personal touch.
Asbury Park's dining scene has expanded dramatically and includes many LGBTQ+-owned and gay-friendly establishments. Restaurants along Cookman Avenue and Main Street span casual to fine dining, the boardwalk offers ocean-view options, and coffee shops and bakeries double as community gathering spaces. Craft breweries and cocktail bars round out an increasingly ambitious food-and-drink scene.
Asbury Park is generally a safe destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, with an established queer community and a progressive local government; same-sex marriage has been legal statewide in New Jersey since 2013. As at any beach city, standard urban precautions apply at night. The local police maintain community relations with LGBTQ+ organizations.
Transit and Getting Around
Asbury Park is easily reached from New York City on NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line to the Asbury Park station downtown; the trip takes roughly 90 minutes from Penn Station. Driving is straightforward via the Garden State Parkway (Exit 102), then Route 66 or Route 33 toward the shore. Once in town the downtown and boardwalk are highly walkable, and rideshare services operate throughout the city.
Daytrips and Nearby Attractions
Asbury Park's Jersey Shore location puts beaches, boardwalk attractions and neighboring towns within easy reach. Ocean Grove sits immediately to the south, while Spring Lake, Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea are nearby beach communities each with their own character. About 30 minutes north at Sandy Hook, Gunnison Beach is New Jersey's only legal clothing-optional beach and a longtime gay favorite. The Shore offers swimming, surfing and water sports, and the Asbury Park Boardwalk itself includes the Casino building, arcades and seasonal attractions.

Convention Hall.
Кілька гей-френдлі закладів — Johnny Mac's, Asbury Festhalle, Wonder Bar і тераса The Asbury’s — доповнюють нічне життя.
Wonder Bar.
Asbury Park
У сусідньому містечку Ocean Grove вікторіанські гостьові будинки, такі як The Melrose та The Ocean View Inn, пропонують затишне проживання.
