Last verified: October 2026. Asbury Park has one gay hotel, and it has a nightclub inside it: The Empress Hotel at 101 Asbury Avenue, gay-owned and wrapped around Paradise, still trading in 2026. There is no men-only hotel, no clothing-optional guesthouse and no sauna in town. The former Hotel Tides on Seventh Avenue, a fixture of gay guidebooks for years, now trades as the mainstream St. Laurent Social Club. Everything else is a gay-friendly mainstream hotel along Ocean Avenue and Fifth Avenue, or a Victorian B&B over Wesley Lake in Ocean Grove, which is dry. The town is small (about 16,000 people) and the scene has two poles about 18 minutes apart on foot: Paradise by the boardwalk at the south end and Georgies at Fifth Avenue and Memorial Drive by the railway. This guide covers which end to sleep at, real walking times, the 14.625% room tax, Jersey Pride on 6 June 2027, and getting home after the 2 am close.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Paradise (Asbury Ave and Ocean Ave) | Walk to Georgies (Fifth Ave and Memorial Dr) | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The gay-owned stay | The Empress Hotel | 0 min (same building) | 18–20 min, or a short ride | Anyone who came for the scene, and bear and Pride weekends. Watch-out: club noise until 2 am, and the pool is the party on summer weekends. Rooms are basic for the price. |
| Men-only or clothing-optional | None exist in Asbury Park in 2026 | n/a | n/a | The nearest clothing-optional option is Gunnison Beach at Sandy Hook, a beach, not a hotel, and a drive north. |
| On Fifth Avenue, the Pride end | The Asbury Hotel | 8–10 min | 12–14 min, straight down Fifth Ave | Groups, first-timers, Pride weekend. Watch-out: mainstream and busy, the Salvation rooftop draws non-guests on summer evenings. |
| Oceanfront, big and old | Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel | 11–13 min | 15–17 min | Sea views and the gay beach 4–6 min away. Watch-out: reviews are mixed (3.6 on Google from 2,000-plus ratings), so pick a renovated room and read recent reviews. |
| Quiet block with a pool | The St. Laurent Social Club | 16–18 min | 10–12 min | Couples who want a saltwater pool and a calmer street. Watch-out: farthest of the Asbury hotels from Paradise, so plan a ride home from the south end. |
| Ocean Grove B&Bs | The Melrose, The Ocean View Inn | 8–10 min (Melrose), 11–14 min (Ocean View) | 20–26 min, take a car | Quiet nights and Victorian porches next to the Empress end. Watch-out: no alcohol is sold in Ocean Grove, and the Melrose's reviews are mixed. |
| Luxury | Asbury Ocean Club (not in our listings) | Not measured, mid-strip on Ocean Ave | Not measured | The polished option on the oceanfront. Watch-out: mainstream, and rates sit well above everything else in town; confirm before booking. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
The walkable zone is a rectangle about 1.3 km long. Its east side is Ocean Avenue and the boardwalk, from Convention Hall at the north end down to the Casino and Wesley Lake at the south. Its west side is Main Street (Route 71) and the railway, with Memorial Drive running alongside the tracks. Cookman Avenue and Bangs Avenue are the downtown restaurant streets in the south-west corner. Fifth Avenue is the street that ties it together: the gay beach at the boardwalk end, the Jersey Pride festival site at Ocean Avenue, The Asbury Hotel at number 210 and Georgies at number 810 by Memorial Drive.
The catch is that the two gay bars sit at opposite corners. From the Empress to Georgies is about 1.1 km in a straight line and 18–20 minutes on foot. In summer people do it in both directions all night. In the off-season, or at 3 am after the 2 am close, most take an Uber for the short hop. Pick your end according to which bar you will close.

The Empress end: Asbury Avenue and the south boardwalk
The Empress Hotel sits on Asbury Avenue a block back from the boardwalk, with Paradise in the same building. Your walk home is a corridor. The gay section of the beach at the Fifth Avenue boardwalk entrance is 7–8 minutes north along the boards, the mixed Watermark lounge at 800 Ocean Avenue is a few minutes closer, and Wonder Bar is 8 minutes away. Downtown on Cookman Avenue (for dinner at Brickwall at number 522) is 12–13 minutes west.
Noise is the trade. On Friday and Saturday Paradise runs until 2 am, and on summer weekend afternoons the pool becomes the club's outdoor space. Ask for a room away from the pool side if you plan to sleep before 2. At 3 am this is the safest end of town to be walking home, because you are not walking home at all.
Fifth Avenue and the north boardwalk
The Asbury Hotel at 210 Fifth Avenue is two blocks from the boardwalk and the most useful mainstream base in town. Measured from the hotel's real Fifth Avenue position, the gay beach is 4–6 minutes, Paradise 8–10 minutes south along Ocean Avenue, and Georgies 12–14 minutes straight down Fifth Avenue with no turns. It has around 110 rooms, including bunk-bed rooms that work for groups, and the rooftop bar is open to the public. In 2026 the Pride festival was staged at Fifth and Ocean Avenues, two blocks away.
The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel at 1401 Ocean Avenue faces the beach by Convention Hall. It is 3–4 minutes to Wonder Bar, 4–6 minutes to the gay beach and 11–13 minutes to Paradise. This stretch is loud on concert nights (Convention Hall, Wonder Bar and the Stone Pony are all on Ocean Avenue), and quiet in winter. Ocean Avenue itself is well lit and has foot traffic late in season.

Seventh Avenue and the north side
The St. Laurent Social Club at 408 Seventh Avenue is the old Hotel Tides building, about a block from the boardwalk, with a heated saltwater pool and a bar and restaurant that locals use. It is the quietest of the Asbury hotels at night. Georgies is 10–12 minutes away via Fifth Avenue, the beach 11–12 minutes, but Paradise is 16–18 minutes south. If your night ends at Paradise, book a ride back.
Ocean Grove, over Wesley Lake
Ocean Grove is the Victorian Methodist camp-meeting town directly south of Asbury Park, across Wesley Lake. It has a long-standing gay presence among homeowners and B&B keepers, but it is still dry: no bars, no alcohol sales. Bring your own to the porch if your B&B allows it. The Melrose on Seaview Avenue is 8–10 minutes from Paradise once you cross the lake by the Casino at the beach end. The Ocean View Inn at 22 Ocean Pathway is 11–14 minutes, with better reviews (4.6 from about 90 ratings). Georgies is 20–26 minutes from either, which is a car. The Majestic Hotel at 19 Main Avenue in Ocean Grove has marketed itself to gay travellers as a gay-friendly B&B of about 9 rooms; we could not verify its 2026 ownership or status, so confirm before booking.

Where not to sleep
Do not book on price alone along Route 35 or Route 66 out by the highway and assume you can walk in; you cannot. Inside town, the blocks west of Main Street and the railway are residential and thin out after dark. You have no reason to be there at 3 am, so take a car from Georgies if you are heading anywhere other than east down Fifth Avenue.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
The Empress is the only gay-owned hotel in town. It dates from 1961 (it was on the sleeve of Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" in 1980). Record producer Shep Pettibone opened Paradise there in May 1999 and reopened the hotel side in 2004, and he is still listed as owner. We found no report of a sale or rebrand as of October 2026, and it was taking bookings for autumn 2026. Some booking sites list it as "The Empress Hotel & Adult Nightclub", so search under that name too. It is not men-only. It is a mixed LGBTQ hotel that takes straight guests as well, and the club crowd is men and women. Paradise is open to non-guests, so the pool is not a private guest space on party days. Winter opening was not verifiable; if you are coming between November and April, ring the hotel before you book.
Men-only: none, and none in the recent past that we can trace. Clothing-optional: no hotel or guesthouse. Gunnison Beach at Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) is the clothing-optional beach, roughly 40 minutes' drive north, with a long-established gay stretch.
Who left the gay market: the Hotel Tides at 408 Seventh Avenue, long popular with gay visitors, now trades as The St. Laurent Social Club, a general-market boutique hotel and wedding venue. It had rebranded by 2022. Its pool sells day passes through ResortPass, so non-guests can use it, and that cuts both ways.
Private rooms: misterb&b lists a few rooms with gay hosts in Asbury Park. Note that the city restricts short-term rentals: permits, an owner-occupancy test and a cap of 180 days. A whole-house listing with no host on site may not be legal, and those are the ones that get cancelled.

Booking rules that bite
- Room tax: 14.625% on top of the rate. That is New Jersey sales tax at 6.625%, the state occupancy fee at 5% and Asbury Park's municipal occupancy tax at 3%. Booking sites often show the base rate first.
- Visitors and ID. US hotels do not charge "joiner" fees, and there is no police registration of guests. The registered guest shows photo ID and a card at check-in. Anyone staying overnight should be on the booking, so book for 2 guests on the booking site and no question ever comes up. A guest who comes back with you at 2 am and leaves in the morning is your business. If you are going to be two people at check-in, it costs nothing to declare it.
- Age. New Jersey's drinking age is 21, and bars check ID at the door. Many shore hotels also set 21 as the minimum check-in age. Confirm with your hotel if anyone in the group is younger.
- Deposits. Expect a card hold for incidentals at check-in, released a few days after check-out. Debit cards can tie up cash for longer.
- Minimum stays. Summer weekends, holiday weekends and Pride weekend commonly carry 2-night minimums at Asbury Park and Ocean Grove properties. B&Bs often have stricter cancellation windows (7 to 14 days is common) than chain-style hotels.
- Fees. Look for amenity or facility fees, parking charges and pet fees at the final booking screen. Asbury Park charges for beach access in summer, so ask whether your hotel includes beach badges.
- Rates. The Empress runs about US$160–250 a night on autumn weeknights and passes US$400 on peak summer weekends. Other hotels' rates swing similarly between the shoulder months and July and August, so compare like-for-like dates.
The gay calendar and where to book for it

Jersey Pride: Sunday 6 June 2027
Jersey Pride, New Jersey's statewide LGBTQ+ Pride celebration, is confirmed by its organiser, Jersey Pride Inc., for Sunday 6 June 2027, its 35th year. The 2026 edition ran on 7 June at Fifth Avenue and Ocean Avenue. The 2027 site has not been published yet, but it is always near the boardwalk. It is a one-day festival, so the crunch night is Saturday 5 June. The north end (The Asbury, the Berkeley, the St. Laurent) puts you on the festival's doorstep. The Empress puts you at the after-party. There are no official partner hotels that we could confirm. Rooms within walking distance for the Saturday night go months ahead; book by February or March and expect 2-night minimums.
Asbury Park Bear Invasion: summer 2027, dates not announced
The town's bear weekend runs for four days around the Empress and Paradise, with pool tea dances and beach parties. The 2026 edition ran 31 July to 3 August. Dates for 2027 had not been announced as of October 2026, so treat late July or early August as likely but unconfirmed. If you want a room at the Empress itself, it is the hotel's busiest weekend, so book as soon as dates appear. Ocean Grove is the overflow, 8–14 minutes away on foot.

The summer season: Memorial Day to Labor Day
The gay season traditionally opens with Paradise's poolside Sunday T-dance on Memorial Day weekend (29 to 31 May 2027) and closes on Labor Day weekend (4 to 6 September 2027). Confirm Paradise's own programme nearer the time. Those are the two dearest weekends after Pride. Georgies also holds a summer block party on Fifth Avenue (20 June in 2026; 2027 date not announced).
Getting back at 3 am
From the airport. Newark Liberty (EWR) is the nearest major airport. By car it is about an hour without traffic, and much longer on summer Friday afternoons on the Garden State Parkway. By rail, take the AirTrain to Newark Airport station and then NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line south to Asbury Park station, by Main Street and Cookman Avenue. Many trips change at Long Branch. Allow around 2 hours door to door. From the station it is 20 minutes on foot to the Empress, or a short Uber.
From New York. The same North Jersey Coast Line runs from New York Penn Station in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. There is no overnight service. The last northbound trains leave well before the bars close, so a Saturday night out means staying over. Check NJ Transit's current timetable rather than relying on memory.
Inside town. Bars close at 2 am. Uber and Lyft both work and are the standard late-night move, though at closing time on summer Saturdays expect surge pricing and a wait. Local taxi firms exist; ask the Empress front desk or the bar staff for a number that answers at 2 am. There is no night bus worth planning around.
Walking safety by street. Ocean Avenue and the boardwalk zone are lit and have people on them in season. Fifth Avenue between Ocean Avenue and Main Street is residential and fine. Cookman Avenue is busy until the restaurants close. West of Main Street and the railway, take a car. Ocean Grove is very quiet after midnight. That makes it safe in most respects, but it is dark, so keep your phone torch handy between the lake crossing and your B&B.
Health, safety and the law
Sexual health. The VNACJ LGBTQ+ Community Health Center is at 1301 Main Street, Asbury Park (telephone 732-502-5130), 9–11 minutes' walk from the St. Laurent. It offers STI testing, rapid HIV and syphilis testing, PrEP and HIV care. Ring ahead for appointments and opening hours. For PEP outside hours, go to an emergency department within 72 hours of exposure. The nearest is Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, just south-west of town. QSpot, the LGBTQ+ community centre at 1601 Asbury Avenue, and Garden State Equality on Main Street can point you to local services.
App dates. We found no reported 2025–2026 incidents specifically targeting gay visitors in Asbury Park. The usual US pattern of robbery set up through dating apps still applies anywhere. Meet first at a bar, tell a friend the address, and keep valuables in the room safe when someone new comes back.
Drugs and cannabis. Adult-use cannabis is legal in New Jersey from age 21 and can be bought from licensed dispensaries. Smoking it in public is not allowed, and hotels treat it like tobacco. GHB, crystal meth and other chems are illegal, and possession is prosecuted. Hotels charge cleaning fees for any smoking in rooms, often a few hundred dollars. Check your hotel's policy.
Smoking and drinking on the beach. Smoking is banned on New Jersey public beaches and the boardwalk, and alcohol is not allowed on Asbury Park's beach outside licensed premises. In Ocean Grove, the beach traditionally stays closed on Sunday mornings in season; confirm times locally.
The law. Same-sex relations and marriage are legal nationwide. New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination covers sexual orientation (since 1992, the year Jersey Pride began) and gender identity, and that includes hotels. Public nudity is not allowed on Asbury Park's beach; Gunnison Beach at Sandy Hook is the legal exception.
Three picks
Budget: a bunk room at The Asbury Hotel. There is nothing cheap within walking distance in summer. Splitting one of The Asbury's bunk-bed rooms among friends is the cheapest legal way to sleep two blocks from the boardwalk, on the Fifth Avenue axis between the gay beach and Georgies. Price per person depends entirely on the group; check the rate for your dates.
Mid-range: The Empress Hotel. At about US$160–250 a night outside peak, it is the only room in town where the gay scene is downstairs and the walk home is a staircase. Book a room off the pool if you value sleep, and accept that the rooms are not why you came.
Splurge: Asbury Ocean Club. The polished oceanfront option, not in our listings and mainstream, with rates to confirm before booking. If you prefer to splurge on calm rather than polish, The St. Laurent Social Club gives you a saltwater pool on a quiet block, 10–12 minutes from Georgies.
Frequently asked
