Central Alabama Pride (Birmingham Pride)
About This Event
Central Alabama Pride runs Birmingham's Pride, and its roots go back to the 1970s: the first celebration was a "Day in the Park" on 24 June 1979, sponsored by the gay rights group Lambda, Inc. The first march followed on 25 June 1989, from Lambda's headquarters on 27th Street South to Rushton Park. The organisation marked its 48th anniversary in 2026.
Pride Week now fills the first half of June: an interfaith service, a punk show, a drag brunch, then the Pride in the Magic City Parade through the Lakeview District on Saturday evening, and PrideFest in Linn Park on Sunday with food trucks, vendors, health resources, a kids' zone and headline acts.
In 2026 events ran from 1 to 14 June, with the parade on 13 June and PrideFest on 14 June. In September 2026 the group's president, Dezmond Turner, was arrested on child-abuse and sexual-misconduct charges and left the leadership after board action, according to the Alabama Reporter; the case was pending when we checked.
The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
