Same-sex activity has been legal in Bulgaria since 1968, with an equal age of consent and protection from discrimination by sexual orientation. There is no marriage or partnership recognition, a 2024 law bans school "LGBT propaganda", and legal gender change is blocked. Big-city centres are generally safe for visitors, but public affection between men draws attention.

The honest summary: Burgas is Bulgaria's fourth-largest city, a port of about 189,000 people (NSI, end of 2025) with a long seafront park, a central beach and a walkable centre. It has no gay bar, club or sauna. We checked in October 2026, and the last one, Club Chameleon, has been reported closed since 2019. The only gay venue on this stretch of coast is Alexander Club, a seasonal club in the Sunny Beach resort 35 km north. In May 2027 the city will be busier and more queer than it has ever been, because Burgas hosts the Eurovision Song Contest. The rest of the year, queer life here is private: dating apps, friends' parties and a trip to Sofia for anything bigger. Same-sex relations are legal in Bulgaria, but the country is conservative, and the one Pride Burgas has held, in 2021, met a much larger counter-protest. Most visitors have no trouble, but two men holding hands in the street will get noticed.
Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal in Bulgaria since 1968, and the age of consent is the same for everyone (parliament voted in March 2026 to raise it from 14 to 16). The Constitution limits marriage to a man and a woman, and there are no civil partnerships, even though the European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2023 (Koilova and Babulkova v. Bulgaria) that the country must recognise same-sex couples. Discrimination based on sexual orientation is banned, and since 2023 homophobic hate crimes are an aggravating factor. A 2024 law bans "propaganda" of non-traditional sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Legal gender change has been blocked since a 2023 Supreme Court decision, though an EU Court of Justice ruling of March 2026 (the Shipova case) forces courts to recognise changes made in other EU countries.
Eurovision 2027: the week everything changes
Dara's "Bangaranga" won Eurovision 2026 in Vienna, Bulgaria's first win, and on 13 August 2026 the EBU and Bulgarian National Television picked Burgas over Sofia to host. The semi-finals are on Tuesday 11 and Thursday 13 May 2027 and the Grand Final is on Saturday 15 May, all at Arena Burgas on Stefan Stambolov boulevard in the Izgrev district, a hall that opened in 2023 and holds up to about 15,000 with standing room. The Eurovision Village, with a free stage and screenings, is planned for the Port of Burgas. EuroClub details, and any Pride House or fan-club nights, had not been announced at the time of writing.
Two practical points. First, book a room the moment you have tickets: officials count about 155,000 beds across the four municipalities around Burgas, but the central hotels listed below will go first, and Sunny Beach and Sozopol are 35 km away. Second, expect the contest areas to feel like any Eurovision host city, crowded and friendly, while the rest of Burgas stays the conservative Bulgarian city it is. Fan guides have already flagged the 2021 Pride attack and the chance of nationalist counter-demonstrations, so keep an eye on local news that week. Our Eurovision 2027 page has dates, tickets and updates.
Bars and nightlife
Burgas has no gay bar. Travel Gay marks Club Chameleon on Lermontov street, which called itself the city's only gay club, as closed, with reports from 2019 and again in 2024. Spartacus still lists it, but nothing on the ground backs that up. The bars that come up when you search Google Maps for "gay bar Burgas" (Bar Bossa, Famouse, Pillow, the NAKED Beach club, Dock 5) are ordinary mainstream places with no LGBTQ+ link. NAKED is just a brand name; it isn't a nudist beach.
The one real option is Alexander Club in Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag), inside the Royal Beach Barceló mall, about 35 km and 50 minutes by bus north of Burgas. Google lists it as a gay night club. Its own site advertises drag queens and performers, and Travel Gay mentions a darkroom. It is seasonal: the 2025 season opened on 18 April, the 2026 season was announced in March, and it is closed in winter, so check gayclubbg.com or Instagram before you go. In 2026 it ran a Eurovision watch party, so it is worth watching for May 2027 events. Two older Sunny Beach names, Mix Time Out and Bar Sunrise, are closed or have no trace since 2023.
Otherwise, a night out in Burgas means the mixed bars and cafés on the two pedestrian streets, Aleksandrovska and Bogoridi, and the beach bars along the Sea Garden in summer. Most local queer people meet through Grindr, Romeo and Instagram. Meet new contacts in a public place first, as you would anywhere.
There is no gay sauna in Burgas, Sunny Beach, Nessebar or Sozopol, and we found no reliable source for any cruising area in the city. The saunas you will see listed are hotel spas and ordinary wellness centres.
No beach near Burgas is documented as gay. Bulgaria has no nudism law, and naturism is informal. The established naturist beaches are Irakli, between Obzor and Nessebar about 45 km north, the naturist strip at Sunny Beach, and Harmanite in Sozopol, about 30 km south. Sites that call Burgas Central Beach or the salt pans nudist are auto-generated; ignore them. Krapets, sometimes listed, is about 200 km north near Shabla.
Pride and community
Burgas has held one Pride, on 15 May 2021, under the slogan "Love is stronger than hate". It was organised locally with support from the Sofia group LGBT Deystvie and was a static gathering, not a march. A few dozen people took part. A much larger crowd of nationalists turned up, objects were thrown, a rainbow flag was burned, and more than 300 police kept the groups apart. There hasn't been a Burgas Pride since. Deystvie held an anti-discrimination meeting in the city in April 2024, and a "ЛГБТИ Бургас" Facebook page exists, but we couldn't confirm any recent local activity.
For a Pride, go to Sofia Pride, held on a Saturday in June; the 2026 march was on 13 June from Knyazheska Garden, with Dara performing. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing. Sofia is about 390 km away, roughly five and a half hours by train or bus, or a short flight.
Health
Free, anonymous rapid testing for HIV and hepatitis B and C is available at the KABKIS office in the Regional Health Inspectorate, Aleksandrovska 120, room 102. The Ministry of Health lists working days 08:30 to 16:00, but that list dates from 2022, so call ahead.
Where to stay
None of these hotels is a gay venue; they're simply central, well reviewed and operating in 2026. For Eurovision, anything walkable to the centre or the port is the best base.
Hotel Bulgaria Burgas: the high-rise where Aleksandrovska and Bogoridi meet, with a spa and sea-view rooms.
Club Chameleon (Lermontov 11): Burgas's only gay club, reported closed since 2019.
"Incanto" gay-friendly club: AI-written listings invented this. Incanto in Burgas is a restaurant in Mall Galleria.
"Dukiana" café: appears in the same AI text and doesn't exist.
Mix Time Out and Bar Sunrise (Sunny Beach): website dead, and closed since 2023, respectively.
"An active LGBTQ+ scene with bars, clubs and Pride events": an old line from this site that search engines still quote. It was wrong, and we've removed it.
Practical tips
Burgas Airport (BOJ) is in Sarafovo, about 10 km north-east of the centre. Bus 15 runs to the centre and Bus Station South in about 25 minutes (€0.80 on board); a taxi from the rank costs roughly €10 to €15.
Bulgaria has used the euro since 1 January 2026. Older guides quote prices in leva (€1 = 1.95583 leva).
Bus Station South, next to the railway station, has buses to Sunny Beach and Nessebar (about 50 minutes), Sozopol (about 35 km), Varna (about 2 hours) and Sofia.
In Bulgaria a nod means "no" and a shake of the head means "yes". Ask twice if you're unsure.
Outside the centre, keep public affection low-key, especially late at night and around football crowds.
A few words
Здравейте (zdraveyte): hello.
Благодаря (blagodarya): thank you.
Колко струва? (kolko struva?): how much is it?
Наздраве! (nazdrave!): cheers!
гей (gey): gay. It's the neutral word; ЛГБТИ is used in the media.

No. We found no gay bar or club open in Burgas in October 2026. Club Chameleon, the city's last gay club, has been reported closed since 2019. The nearest gay venue is Alexander Club in Sunny Beach, about 35 km north, which opens for the summer season, roughly April to October.
Generally yes for visitors, with some care. Same-sex relations are legal and discrimination based on sexual orientation is banned, but Bulgaria is conservative. The only Burgas Pride, in May 2021, drew a much larger nationalist counter-protest. Keep public affection low-key outside the centre and late at night, and meet app contacts in a public place first.
The semi-finals are on Tuesday 11 and Thursday 13 May 2027 and the Grand Final is on Saturday 15 May, all at Arena Burgas in the Izgrev district. The Eurovision Village is planned for the Port of Burgas. Tickets are sold through eurovision.tv, and hotels in the centre will fill first, so book early.
Not any more. Burgas held one Pride gathering, on 15 May 2021, supported by LGBT Deystvie; it was not a march, and none has been held since. Bulgaria's Pride is Sofia Pride, on a Saturday in June (13 June in 2026). The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing.
No. There is no gay sauna in Burgas or the nearby resorts, and no beach on this coast is documented as gay. The established naturist beaches are Irakli, about 45 km north, the naturist strip at Sunny Beach, and Harmanite in Sozopol, about 30 km south.
At the KABKIS office in the Regional Health Inspectorate, Aleksandrovska 120, room 102. Rapid tests for HIV and hepatitis B and C are free and anonymous. The published hours are working days 08:30 to 16:00, but they date from 2022, so call the inspectorate first.
