關於此地 Pedion tou Areos

A beautiful park with free admission, located right next to the National Archaeological Museum. The park was designed in 1934 to honor the heroes of the Greek War of Independence of 1821. There are not only the statues of these heroes but also large statues of the goddess Athena and King Constantine I on a horse. There are more than 70 different tree species. There are also a lot of stray cats around.

A park in Athens that is leafy and cool. Many people take a run, walk dogs and so on. If you need relaxation or a run, head here.

It is worth visiting for a walk in the green, in recent years has been made a remarkable effort and is obvious. The tall trees and the green dominate the whole park. Ideal for touring the streets of the park by bike. It has two children's playgrounds or one is on the upper side of the alsos near the PROTOMAGIA square, it is in quite good condition and has been upgraded with carpets around the toys and another at the bottom near the road of the heroes of the revolution which is for younger children, but need more toys. The cleanliness is excellent. It has plenty of space to become a space with outdoor gymnastics instruments. A special space for dogs should also be created. After many years the stall in Gardenia has reopened and has a small coffee shop for the necessary things. On the water route you will find turtles.

It is a very nice park and this Christmas time looks spectacular. The best time is from six at night when the decoration lights are on, it is extensive, you can buy handmade objects, food, ice skating, enjoy live musical performances, take a picture with Santa, there is amusement park among many other things. It should be well warmed and with comfortable shoes. A nice experience for anyone who wants to meet and enjoy.

When we look for greenery in the tuft of the city, we think mainly of the National Garden, at the exit of Plaka. But it’s worth going up to the Champ de Mars, beyond Omonia, which is much less frequented by tourists and is the largest green space in Athens (23 hectares!). In addition to its calm and freshness, we discover the imposing Allée des Heroes, chanted by a whole series of busts of Independence fighters. At the entrance, a friendly kiosk offers drinks and, a stone’s throw from Mavrommataion street, there is a large and particularly pleasant beer garden.

After the National Garden(by Syntagma Square), it is Athens' most beautiful and historic park. If you happen to come from Britain and its former dominions, you have at least one good reason to visit it: On the edge of park, by Alexandras avenue you will see the monument of goddess Athena, with spear, shield and helmet towering over your head. The monument, erected in 1952 (i.e. when Winston Churchill was still prime minister of the U.K.) is dedicated in gratitude and in honour of the British, Australians and Newzealanders who lost their lives fighting in Greece, chiefly during World War Two. At the foot of the monument you will notice a statue of the English lion as well as the flags of the three nations. In front of the monument an olive tree orchard has been created in recent years. You may stroll farther into the park to admire some flora: coniferous trees, bitter orange trees, oleander bush, and many other. In the park there are also two or three small but beautiful Greek Orthodox churches, as well as a large number of other monuments and statues, dedicated to heroes of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1828) and some World War Two heroes (the so-called "sacred batallion"). In case you are hungry or thirsty there is a good cantine inside the park. Right opposite the Athena statue, just outside the park, on the other side of Alexandras avenue, there is also a snack bar, selling coffee,Greek traditional pies (e.g.chesse pie, spinach pie and "bougatsa"=sweet cream pie), as well as some Beirut-style and other sweets. You can walk down Alexandras avenue up to Mavromateon Street (i.e. on the western edge of the park), turn right, where you may enjoy coffee, full meals and drink in the excellent "Green Park" caf'e/restaurant(see photos).Alternatively, you may walk into the nearby "Hotel Park" to still your thirst and appetite in its bars and dining facilities. Pedion Areos Park is now completely safe and there is a security patrol inside at all hours. Nevertheless, it would be advisable to visit the park by daylight, e.g. between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. hours, when there will be plenty of strollers (and quite a few joggers) in the park. A park certainly worth visiting.

A very nice park, indeed! We rented an apartment on the 3rd of September street, about four blocks from the park, for two weeks. Since I’m responsible for the morning walks with our dog, my choise became a walk in the park. I, or rather we (including the dog) were not disappointed! A very tranquile walk, yet exiting for Isolde (our Mini Schnauzer) because we met a lot of nice dogs on the same morning routine. For me, a walk in the park became an essential start of the day. The park is nicely renovated. It has a basic bar and coffe shop in the middle and if you would like a more stylish setting, we strongly recommend the Green Park Bar & Restaurant on the western fringe of the park. To sum up: a great place for just walking through, enjoy it with the very, very hectic and noisy Athens traffic at a distance and be amazed about the silence despite that it is not more than a couple of hundred meters from any of the highly trafficated steets surrounding the park. Just one remark: It took me a long time (before I found an English language website) to find out that the monument of Athena and the British, Australian and New Zealand flags on the south side of the park were there to commemorate the joint forces fight during the Second World War in order to liberate Greece. A sign, poster or a plaque in English would have been helpful.
