Zappeion / National Garden
Visitors praise the National Garden as a welcome green oasis in the city center, offering shade and a variety of plants, and a cozy cafe. However, a significant number of reviews express distress over what they describe as animal cruelty, citing small cages and overcrowded enclosures for the animals.

We liked Athens a lot. We only had 3 days available, so we enjoyed the streets of the center and its most touristy neighborhoods, Monastiraki and Plaka. In any case, we didn't miss the Acropolis Museum, wonderful for its history and architecture, and the climb to the Acropolis. We went up for the visit to the Acropolis at 5:30 PM; if you want to enjoy the experience, choose tickets for a visit in the morning or the evening, as it is scorching hot during the day and it closes some days for the safety of visitors and staff on site. Don't miss eating at some Greek tavern along the streets; you will find good food and hospitality.
Green oasis right in the center of Athens; it is definitely worth a visit both to find a bit of shade and to admire some of the extraordinary plants from all over the world that can be found here.
Free entry and lots of shade for a hot summer day. Mass planting of a range of local trees and plants provides for less suree we my walks. No expanses of lawn and no formal garden beds. Some water features and children’s playground. Found an Australian gum tree growing there.
Beatutiful garden but a dreadful experience walking in a live prison. The animals were placed in small cages and were in a terrible condition. It was very uncomfterble walking past. As mentioned, the park was wonderful but very unnessecery with the poor animals.
Animal abuse. Cages like prison, and the chickens were injured. It was maybe 70 turtles in a small pond. It was like walking trough a real prison.
Horrible display of animal cruelty. The terrapin enclosure is so overcrowded. The turtles are trying to climb up the walls and they cannot get out. The rock in the middle is so overcrowded. It is devastating seeing the turtles treated like this. It’s this tiny “pond” and it’s an abhorrent and abominable display of animal cruelty.
Beautiful park in Athens, a visit is worthwhile! The café inside is also very cozy for a break in the lively city!
Perfect for a short break in the bustling city.
Such a beautiful garden! It is very well maintained and very popular with the locals. Athens has very few green spaces and so this is a real treasure. Be sure to find the Roman floor mosaic!
It is a very nice place, full of greenery, shade, fountains, benches... ideal for resting and sheltering from the heat in the summer months. It is located north of the temple of Zeus and right next to Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament. Admission is free and within the entire complex is the Záppeion (building where conferences and events are currently held) which cannot be visited but if they have the doors open you can see the immense hall. It has two main types of columns: an outer Corinthian-style portico and an inner courtyard surrounded by an Ionic-style colonnade.
A huge, very beautiful garden
A park full of trees and plants, a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for a stroll, walking, contemplation, coffee in hand with company, reading or contemplation. At night, there is no lighting everywhere, so it is best to avoid the darkest spots.
Very nice place for the kids. They loved. In the garden have a lot of wild parrots. Take water with you in the hot days.
We went to Aigli for dinner. The asparagus risotto was amazing.
Beautiful and peaceful place.
