Háttér Society (Háttér Társaság) has been Hungary's main LGBTQ+ organisation since 1995. From Budapest it runs an information and crisis helpline, a legal-aid service that has taken discrimination and hate-crime cases to court, HIV prevention work, psychological counselling and the country's LGBTQ+ archive and library.
For visitors it is the practical contact point if something goes wrong: harassment, a hate incident or trouble with police. It has been one of the loudest critics of Hungary's 2021 law restricting LGBTQ+ content. Service hours and current contact details are posted on hatter.hu; check there before turning up at the office, as most services run by appointment or by phone.
