The honest summary: Sibiu is one of the prettiest cities in Romania and a fine place to spend a few days, but it has no gay scene to speak of. There is no gay bar, no sauna and no regular Pride. The one dedicated club, Delirio, has gone quiet, and its old room now hosts a mixed weekend club that says it welcomes LGBTQIA+ guests. Come for the Old Town, the festivals and the mountains, and go to Cluj-Napoca, three hours away, if you want a night out with other queer people.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations are legal (fully since 2001, equal age of consent 16) and sexual-orientation discrimination is banned by Ordinance 137/2000, but Romania has no same-sex marriage or civil partnership. The Civil Code (art. 277) rules out marriage, the 2018 referendum to write a ban into the Constitution failed on 21% turnout, and the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Romania in Buhuceanu (2023) for giving couples no recognition at all.
What the scene looks like in 2026
Sibiu has about 134,000 residents (2021 census). It was European Capital of Culture in 2007, together with Luxembourg, and still lives off that reputation for theatre, music and festivals. That gives the centre a relaxed, international feel in summer. It doesn't add up to visible queer life. Travel Gay lists exactly one Sibiu venue, Delirio, and the Romanian listings site Zile și Nopți called Delirio "the only gay club in Sibiu" back in 2020. Most LGBTQ+ locals meet through apps and friends, and in the mixed bars of the Old Town.
Where to go out
MINGLE. The Club, Strada Matei Millo 1 (Dumbrăvii, about 2 km south of the Old Town). Friday and Saturday, 23:00–05:00. The club's own listing says LGBTQIA+ guests are welcome and that it wants to work with LGBTQIA+ groups, but it is a mixed club, not a gay bar. It uses the address Delirio used, so it is the place to try first. Check @mingle.sibiu on Instagram before you go.
Old Town bars. The terraces on Piața Mare and Piața Mică and the cellar bars on the streets between them draw a young, mixed crowd. None of them markets itself as gay, and we won't pretend otherwise. Holding hands on the main squares in summer rarely gets more than a glance; late at night in the outer districts, be more careful.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Delirio Sibiu (Strada Matei Millo 1). Opened in June 2015 as a Saturday-night offshoot of Delirio in Cluj, and was the city's only gay club for years. Zile și Nopți reported in July 2020 that its parties had stopped. Queer in the World still listed it in December 2023, but we found nothing after that, and delirio.ro no longer resolves. The address is now MINGLE.
"G-Club" and "Atrium Café". These names appear on a few auto-generated travel pages. We found no second source that either exists as a gay venue in Sibiu.
Saunas and cruising
Sibiu has no gay sauna. Romania has two, both called Soho: one in Bucharest and one in Cluj-Napoca (Strada Victor Babeș 33, Thursday to Sunday). Hotel spa saunas in Sibiu, including the large chain hotels, are ordinary mixed facilities. We found no reliable source for cruising areas in Sibiu and list none.
Pride and events
Sibiu has no regular Pride. The first and so far only Sibiu Pride, an LGBTQ+ cultural festival organised by PRIDE România, ran on 15–17 October 2020. Because of the pandemic it was online: talks on Zoom, theatre, a screening of 120 BPM and free HIV testing. No later edition was announced at the time of writing. The nearest marches are Cluj Pride in June (since 2017) and Bucharest Pride in June, organised by ACCEPT.
Sibiu's big mainstream events are worth planning around, because they fill the hotels: the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS) in June, the Christmas market on Piața Mare in December, and a busy summer of concerts and film. None has a dedicated queer programme that we could confirm.
Where to stay
Stay inside or right beside the Old Town, and the squares, museums and bars are all walkable. Casa Luxemburg sits on Piața Mică by the Bridge of Lies, and Imparatul Romanilor is on the pedestrian Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, a minute from Piața Mare. In the lower town, Rosen Villa and Vila Bohemia are small guesthouses with Google ratings of 4.9. Queer in the World names Rosen Villa and Republique among its Sibiu picks. No Sibiu hotel publishes an LGBTQ+-specific policy, but couples booking a double bed are routine for hotels this used to tourists. The full list is on the Sibiu hotels page.
The Old Town is the reason to come. It splits into the Upper Town around Piața Mare, Piața Mică and Piața Huet, and the Lower Town below it, joined by stairways and passages. Climb the Council Tower for the view over the roofs with their "eyes" (the small attic windows). Cross the cast-iron Bridge of Lies, then spend an afternoon at the Brukenthal National Museum on Piața Mare. A short ride south, the ASTRA open-air museum in Dumbrava forest collects traditional village buildings from across Romania. Further out are the fortified Saxon churches of the region and the Transfăgărășan road into the Făgăraș mountains, open in summer only.
Practical tips
Getting there: Sibiu International Airport (SBZ) is about 3 km west of the centre. By road, Brașov is about 2.5 hours away, Cluj-Napoca about 3 and Bucharest 4–5 hours.
Getting around: the Old Town is walkable. Use Bolt or a metered taxi for MINGLE in Dumbrăvii and for late nights.
Apps: Grindr and Romeo are how most local gay men meet. Be careful with new contacts, as you would anywhere.
Help: ACCEPT (acceptromania.ro) in Bucharest is the national LGBTQ+ rights organisation. PRIDE România in Cluj ran Sibiu's 2020 festival.
Currency: Romanian leu (RON). Cards work almost everywhere in the centre.

Is Sibiu worth it for LGBTQ+ travellers?
Yes, as a city break, not as a nightlife trip. It is calm, beautiful and used to foreign visitors, and couples will find it easy as long as they keep the same discretion most Romanians would. If meeting other queer people is the point of the trip, pair Sibiu with a weekend in Cluj-Napoca.
Republique 和 Rosen Villa 都出現在 Queer in the World 的西比烏(Sibiu)清單中。
