關於此地 Malasaña — La Movida Queer Heritage

Malasaña, the grid of streets around Plaza del Dos de Mayo, was the main stage of La Movida Madrileña. This was the music, film and art scene that took off after Franco died in 1975 and lasted into the mid-1980s. Queer and gender-nonconforming performers were at its centre. Pedro Almodóvar shot early work in the area and performed in a glam-punk duo with Fabio McNamara, and Alaska came out of the same circle. What remains today is the neighbourhood itself: bars, record shops and late terraces on the plaza. Few of the original clubs survive, so treat this as a walk through the streets rather than a museum visit. Chueca, Madrid's gay district, is just across Calle Fuencarral.

I went down to the restrooms and it was crawling with cockroaches... it smelled bad and the place was pretty dirty. A beer costs €5.

Simply the best bar in Madrid. A temple to the Madrid scene and everything this city represents. Unforgettable nights.

I've been coming here every weekend for the last two years. The people who work here are the best people in the world. They're wonderful, friendly, and empathetic. They're true friends I'd want to have for the rest of my life. The bar is fantastic too, from the people who come here to the music. But without a doubt, my favorite thing or people about this place are those at the door or behind the bar. I can't forget who they are and all the joy, smiles, and laughter they've given me. I love you all more than I can imagine.
