The Odeon sits on Limmatquai at Bellevue, anchored by an early 1910s Art Nouveau room of marble, brass, and mirrors. A century ago, the tables belonged to émigré writers, artists, and the Dada circle. For decades after that, it ran as a prominent gay meeting place. Today, it’s settled into life as a mainstream café-bar that remains gay-friendly, even if the outright queer clubhouse days are in the past. By daylight, tourists and locals nurse coffees, order drinks, and pick at light meals under the high ceilings. Come evening, the crowd tilts slightly gayer and considerably more mixed. Expect standard central Zürich prices, which is another way of saying they hurt. Tram stop: Bellevue.

As a tourist, you have to accept that prices in Switzerland are a bit higher. We had two apple strudels and two coffees. We sat outside, which we really enjoyed. The fact that the sidewalk runs through the outdoor seating area wasn't a problem. The service was good, the location almost perfect, and the apple strudel was truly delicious – I'd never had that version before. Water was also served with the coffee, which I appreciated. We would definitely go back.
