Birmingham: The Midlands' Gay Capital

Birmingham's Hurst Street Gay Village is England's third-largest LGBTQ+ concentration. It's a tight group of bars and clubs, just south of the city center. This neighborhood has grown into a real community over 40 years.

The anchor is Nightingale Club Birmingham on Kent Street. It's one of the UK's oldest continuously operating gay clubs. Eden Bar Birmingham, on Hurst Street, is the most accessible bar for the whole block. Village Inn Birmingham is the local spot for the community.

Birmingham Pride, over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, is the city's biggest event. More than 70,000 people show up. There's a main stage right in the village streets and a parade through the city center. Birmingham costs a lot less than London or Brighton. Its big LGBTQ+ population means it's a working community scene, not just a place for tourists.

Practical Notes

Birmingham New Street station is the main rail hub. Direct trains from London Euston take 80 minutes. From the station, it's a 15-minute walk to Hurst Street. Birmingham has a good tram and bus network. Birmingham Airport handles domestic and European flights.
