Reading LGBTQ+ Travel Guide

History and Community

Reading's LGBTQ+ community has grown steadily since the 1990s, in step with the town's transformation into a busy Thames Valley hub for tech, media and professional services. Reading's first full-time gay pub, the Wynford Arms, opened in 1992 and became the centre of local scene life until it closed in 2015 after 22 years. A later dedicated venue, the Blagrave Arms, carried the torch as "the town's only LGBT venue" until it, too, closed at the end of 2025. Today Reading has no standing dedicated gay bar; instead the community centres on an annual Pride, a strong set of support organisations, queer-friendly nights at mixed venues, and easy access to London.

Geography and Neighbourhoods

Reading's town centre is compact and walkable, built around the Oracle shopping centre and the pedestrianised streets between the station and the River Kennet. There is no "gay village" in Reading; LGBTQ+ social life is woven through the ordinary town-centre nightlife around Friar Street, Gun Street and Blagrave Street. Blagrave Street, right by the railway station, is worth knowing as the location of the Oakford Social Club and the assembly point for the Pride parade. Caversham, across the Thames to the north, is a pleasant residential area popular with LGBTQ+ residents who want quieter surroundings within walking distance of the centre.

Bars and Nightlife

Be realistic about scale: Reading is a friendly, smaller scene rather than a nightlife destination in its own right. Since the Blagrave Arms closed, the most reliably LGBTQ+-friendly venue is the Oakford Social Club on Blagrave Street, a multi-room pub and late bar by the station that hosts regular drag and cabaret nights — typically monthly, sometimes with touring performers including RuPaul's Drag Race acts — and a "Love Pride" party around Pride season. It sits directly opposite where the Pride parade gathers, which makes it the natural hub on the day.

The other long-running venue queer visitors tend to mention is the Purple Turtle on Gun Street, an independent alternative bar and late club with a rock and indie music policy and an open-minded, student-heavy crowd. It is not a gay bar, but it is regularly named among the town's more inclusive spots. Beyond these, the town centre's general bars and clubs are welcoming, and several host LGBTQ+ or themed events particularly around Pride. For a bigger night out, many locals and visitors simply take the train into London.

Reading Pride

Reading Pride is the highlight of the LGBTQ+ calendar. It is organised by the Reading Pride charity, which staged its first event in 2004, and it is held each year on the first Saturday of September — Saturday 5 September in 2026. The free festival takes place on Kings Meadow, the riverside park just north-east of the centre, and opens with the Love Unites parade, which gathers outside the main entrance of Reading station from mid-morning and sets off around 11am. The Kings Meadow site then hosts a main stage, DJ sets, a funfair, a family area, and community and market stalls through the day, drawing several thousand people from across Berkshire and the Thames Valley. An associated club event, PrideDance, is listed alongside the main festival. Check readingpride.co.uk for the current line-up and timings.

Community Organisations

Reading punches above its weight on LGBTQ+ support. SupportU is Berkshire's dedicated LGBT+ wellbeing charity, based in central Reading, offering confidential casework, a helpline, drop-ins and social groups across the Thames Valley. R-Trans is a long-running trans-inclusive support and social group for Reading and the surrounding area, while ReachOUT provides a youth club for LGBTQ+ young people aged 13–18. The University of Reading has an active student LGBT+ Society on its Whiteknights campus, plus a staff network. Between them these groups, and the Reading Pride charity year-round, form the backbone of the local community for anyone looking to connect.

Accommodation

Reading has a good range of mainstream hotels and guesthouses. Town-centre options such as Pentahotel, easyHotel and the boutique rooms at Market House are most convenient for the bars and for Pride on foot, while the Village Hotel by Caversham Bridge adds a pool and leisure club a short walk north. Chain hotels like the Holiday Inn (off M4 Junction 11) and a Best Western Sure Hotel suit those arriving by car, and there are budget rooms and self-catering apartments closer to the station. None of these are gay-specific hotels, but all are ordinary, welcoming places to stay; for guaranteed LGBTQ+ hospitality some travellers look to dedicated gay hotels on the south coast, such as in Bournemouth or Brighton.

Cruising

Reading is in the UK, which is broadly safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ people. The one outdoor spot with a long-standing reputation is Prospect Park in west Reading, mentioned across UK cruising directories over the years. Activity there is informal, discreet and concentrated in quieter areas after dark; by day it is an ordinary public park. As with any unofficial, unlit space, use common-sense night-time caution and respect other park users.

Food and Dining

Reading's town centre has a diverse and improving food scene, from the independent restaurants and street food around the Oracle Riverside to long-standing spots on and around Friar Street. There is no specifically gay dining quarter, but venues throughout the centre are welcoming, and Caversham's main street offers a relaxed choice of cafés and casual restaurants a little away from the crowds.

Transport and Access

Reading is exceptionally well connected. Reading station, in the town centre, runs frequent fast trains to London Paddington (about 25–30 minutes) as well as services across the South and West and the Elizabeth line into central London. The town has a good local bus network, and the M4 puts Heathrow and London within easy reach by car. Town-centre parking is plentiful but can be costly, so the train or bus is often the easier choice — and the fast London link is a big part of how Reading's scene works, with many people combining a quieter base here with nights out in the capital.

Safety and Practical Information

Reading is considered a safe town by UK standards, and LGBTQ+ residents and visitors generally report feeling comfortable in the centre and at Pride. Standard urban common sense applies late at night. Same-sex marriage is legal across the UK and strong equality protections are in place. For healthcare the NHS applies as everywhere in Britain, the town is English-speaking, and up-to-date community information is best found via Reading Pride and SupportU.

Day Trips and Nearby Attractions

Reading's Thames Valley location makes it a handy base for exploring. Henley-on-Thames, about 10 miles north, is a pretty riverside town for pubs, restaurants and boating; the Chiltern Hills offer countryside walking; and Windsor and its castle are 20–30 minutes away. Closer to home, the ruins of Reading Abbey sit in the centre, and the Kennet and Avon Canal offers pleasant towpath walks. Combined with the quick hop into London, this makes Reading a flexible, low-key base for a Thames Valley trip.

Conclusion

Reading offers a genuine, smaller-scale LGBTQ+ experience: no dedicated gay bar at present, but a welcoming Oakford Social Club with regular drag nights, a well-organised September Pride on Kings Meadow, unusually strong community organisations, and a fast train to London whenever you want a bigger night out. It suits visitors who want a friendly, relaxed base in the Thames Valley rather than a full-scale scene.
