The honest summary: Belém is a city of 1.3 million at the mouth of the Amazon. It has a big, loud LGBTQ+ public life, but in 2026 we couldn't confirm a single gay bar, club or sauna that is open on a normal weeknight. The scene happens at events: the Parada on the last Sunday of September, the Festa da Chiquita on the Saturday of the Círio de Nazaré in October, drag shows, and a few roving queer parties. Time your trip to one of those and you'll see a lot. Turn up on a random Tuesday and you'll find mostly mixed bars.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been available across Brazil since 2013 (CNJ Resolution 175), and since 2019 the Supreme Court has treated homophobia and transphobia as crimes under the Racism Law (ADO 26). Brazil still has high rates of anti-LGBTQ+ violence, so the law on paper and life on the street don't always match.
What the scene actually looks like
We searched Portuguese-language press (O Liberal, DOL, Diário do Pará), Brazilian LGBT+ maps and English guides for gay bars, boates and saunas in Belém. Older clubs such as Malícia and Lux are long gone, and a 2024 DOL feature put it bluntly: the city's LGBT venues "closed one by one". Several places that appear on old lists or on Google as "gay bars in Belém" are actually in Belém, a district of São Paulo, in Bethlehem in the US, or in Rio.
What exists instead is a calendar. Queer parties move between general clubs: the LATE! series (Carnalate! in February 2026, HallowLate! in October, a seventh-birthday edition in April 2026 at Liv Club) is the most regular. The local drag scene, known as the Themônias, has been active for more than a decade. Each October and November the UFPA-backed Mostra de Comicidade Drag runs shows on Wednesdays at Casa Mairí on Praça do Carmo (Cidade Velha), ending with the Excangalhada Drag Race (8 November 2026). The drag brunch Ver-O-Brunch runs at Café com Arte (Travessa Rui Barbosa, Nazaré), an alternative bar that has been open since 2002. Check the events page and the parties' Instagram accounts before you go out, because venues change from one edition to the next.
Two long-running places have no confirmed 2025–26 coverage. We mention them because locals still bring them up, but we can't vouch they're open. Refúgio dos Anjos, also called Bar da Ângela, is a weekend bar in the yard of a house in Guamá that has served the LGBT crowd since 1996 (DOL, June 2024). Rebuw on Rua Bernal do Couto in Umarizal was the only lesbian bar we found, with its last coverage in 2023. Ask around once you're in town.
Where people go out
Umarizal is the area most sources name. Avenida Visconde de Souza Franco, known as the Doca, is a strip of bars and restaurants, and the Parada starts there. Campina and Reduto, around Praça da República and the Theatro da Paz, are where the Chiquita takes over the square on Círio weekend and where some party venues sit. Cidade Velha has the drag shows at Casa Mairí, and Nazaré has Café com Arte. None of these is a gay district. They're mixed nightlife areas where same-sex couples are a normal sight.

Pride and the big dates
Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+ (last Sunday of September). The parade is organised by the Grupo Homossexual do Pará (GHP) and now billed as the Parada do Pará. The crowd gathers from midday on the Doca, and trios elétricos lead it to Praça Waldemar Henrique. The 24th edition was on 27 September 2026. Organisers estimate several hundred thousand people, but there is no independent count. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing. Mosqueiro island, which is part of Belém, holds its own smaller Parada on the last Sunday of July.
Festa da Chiquita (Saturday of Círio weekend, October). This is the one that makes Belém different. While the Círio de Nazaré, one of the world's largest Catholic processions, fills the city, an LGBTQIAPN+ party takes over Praça da República in front of the Theatro da Paz after the Trasladação procession passes. The singer Eloi Iglesias created it and still runs it, and it hands out the Veado de Ouro award. It turned 50 in 2026 (10 October) and is protected heritage under municipal law 9.397/2018 and Pará state law 9.025/2020. The next one should fall on Saturday 9 October 2027, but that date isn't confirmed.
Trans Visibility Day (29 January) brings city-run service days and street actions by GRETTA, the trans-led group coordinated by Renata Taylor.
Closed or changed / Gone but still Googled
- Malícia, Lux: gay clubs of the 2000s and early 2010s, closed.
- Boate Pride, O Quartinho Bar, "Shower Cruising bar": listings once shown on this and other sites. We found no trace of any of them in Belém and have removed them.
- Sauna Xingu: a real gay sauna, but it is in the Belém district of São Paulo, not here.
- Noite Suja: the 2014 party where the Themônias drag scene started. We found no 2025 editions.
- Casa de Acolhimento Darlah Farias: the city's LGBT shelter. It wasn't operating in 2026, and federal prosecutors have gone to court over it.
- Nazaré: Grand Mercure Belém do Pará and Radisson Hotel Maiorana.
- Umarizal: Mercure Belém Boulevard, close to Boulevard Shopping.
- Batista Campos and São Brás: ibis Styles Batista Campos, a budget chain hotel, and the large Hotel Sagres.
- Cidade Velha: Atrium Quinta de Pedras, in a converted historic building.

Where to stay
There's no gay or gay-run hotel. The mainstream hotels in the centre are used to international guests, and the city added capacity for COP30 in November 2025 (the Vila Galé Collection Amazônia opened at Porto Futuro II). Nazaré and Umarizal put you near the Doca and the Círio route. Cidade Velha suits people who want the old town.
Practical tips
Safety: Belém has long been one of Brazil's more violent state capitals, although Pará's homicide rate fell by about a third between 2014 and 2024 (Atlas da Violência 2026). The US State Department rates Brazil Level 2 and specifically warns about dating-app set-ups targeting foreigners and drugged drinks. Meet app dates in a public place, keep your drink with you, use ride-hailing at night, and keep your phone out of sight in crowds at the Círio, Ver-o-Peso market and the Parada.
If something happens: the Polícia Civil has a specialised unit for discriminatory and homophobic crimes (DCCDH), and Disque 100 is the national human-rights line. Belém's municipal LGBTI+ council exists in law (Lei 9.903/2023), but in June 2026 federal prosecutors sued because it wasn't functioning. Don't count on city services.
Health: HIV testing, PrEP and PEP are free through Brazil's public health system (SUS). Trans health care is offered at the state's Ambulatório TT at URE DIPE and at Hospital Universitário João de Barros Barreto in Guamá, by referral.
Getting there and weather: Val-de-Cans airport (BEL) is about 10–12 km from the centre, 20–35 minutes by car. It is hot and humid all year. December to May is the rainy season, with heavy afternoon downpours from January to April. July to October is drier, and that's when both the Parada and the Chiquita take place.

A few words in Portuguese

When is Pride in Belém? The Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+ is on the last Sunday of September, starting from the Doca in Umarizal. The 2026 edition was on 27 September; 2027 hasn't been announced.
What is the Festa da Chiquita? It's an LGBTQIAPN+ street party at Praça da República on the Saturday night of Círio weekend in October. It has run since about 1976 and is protected as cultural heritage by the city and the state.
Is Belém safe for gay travellers? The centre is fine with ordinary big-city precautions. The main risks are street crime and dating-app set-ups, not hostility to couples in the tourist areas. Meet dates in public and use ride-hailing at night.
