Moonstone is a small rural hamlet in Oro-Medonte, Simcoe County, Ontario, best known as the home of the Mount St. Louis Moonstone ski resort - one of the largest family-run ski and snowboard areas in the province. It sits in cottage country just off Highway 400, roughly halfway between Barrie and Orillia and about 140 kilometres (a 90-minute drive) north of Toronto.
Moonstone has no gay bars, clubs, saunas or dedicated LGBTQ+ venues of its own. It is a quiet, outdoorsy place where visitors come to ski, snowboard and enjoy the lakes and trails of the Horseshoe Valley highlands rather than for nightlife. That said, Ontario is one of the most welcoming places in the world for LGBTQ+ travellers, and the inns and cottage-country resorts around Moonstone are mainstream but openly gay-friendly.
For a full night out, the nearest genuine gay nightlife is in Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village - home to long-running spots such as Woody's, Crews & Tangos and Pegasus - about an hour and forty minutes south. The nearby towns of Barrie and Orillia do not currently have a dedicated gay bar.
The region's LGBTQ+ community life centres on Fierte Simcoe Pride, a county-wide organisation that runs social events and a summer Pride festival across Barrie, Orillia, Midland and the rest of Simcoe County. The City of Barrie also hosts its own Barrie Pride each June. Both publish current dates on their websites.
Canada legalised same-sex marriage in 2005 and has strong anti-discrimination protections, so LGBTQ+ visitors can expect an easy, relaxed welcome throughout the Moonstone area.
