Moby Dick is a long-running neighbourhood gay bar on 18th Street in the Castro. It's the low-key option on the block: a pool table at the centre, no cover, cheap drinks and a crowd of locals who've been coming for years, plus visitors who want somewhere without a scene. It's easy to come alone and end up in a game of pool.
It opens at 2pm on weekdays and noon at weekends, and closes at 2am every night. Late afternoon is mellow, and it fills up after dinner and on weekend nights. The rest of the Castro's bars are on the same two blocks of 18th Street, so it's an easy first or last stop.

Somehow they mixed a vodka and Sprite that had probably 3 shots of vodka but tasted like a White Claw (complimentary). And for $7 each! The bartenders here are sorcerers, and the vibes are immaculate.

when it's slow they kick you out at midnight, even when it's raining (6/9/26).....I showed the bartender my Uber ride via the app, I was waiting for an Uber to pick me up.,... yet still kicked out at 12am on a Monday, with literal rain outside , Google hours say closes at 2am...I get it, it's slow and you want to go home ....meet customers half way when they are waiting on their ride share.... he shut down my my Monday night....sad. disappointing
