About this place Sandy Bay Beach

Sandy Bay Beach is a well-known gay beach located in Milnerton, Cape Town, and serves as a favored gathering spot for the local LGBTQ+ community and queer visitors to the city. As a gay beach venue, it offers a relaxed, open atmosphere where you can enjoy the ocean and socialise with other members of the community in a natural seaside setting. Cape Town has a vibrant and established queer scene, and beaches like this one are important social hubs where LGBTQ+ travellers and locals can connect and feel welcome. What to expect at a gay beach in Cape Town is a more casual experience compared to indoor venues—think sunbathing, swimming, beach walks, and conversations with a friendly crowd. The vibe tends to be laid-back during the day, with the beach drawing a mix of visitors throughout the week. Being located in Milnerton, it's accessible from central Cape Town and fits well into a broader beach and outdoor exploration itinerary. The South African summer (November to February) offers warm weather and long daylight hours, making it an ideal time to visit, though the beach welcomes guests year-round. As with any beach destination, it's worth checking local conditions, tide times, and sun safety before your visit. Sandy Bay Beach provides an authentic slice of Cape Town's queer culture and outdoor lifestyle, making it a worthwhile stop for those seeking community connection and natural seaside beauty.

A phenomenal bay perfect for hiking, swimming, or simply relaxing and enjoying the sound of the waves. From Llandudno, you can easily walk to the beach in 15 minutes. Along the way, large rocks invite you to climb. There are two parking lots in Llandudno; if you use the first one further up the hill, you'll need to descend some stairs. The lower parking lot is the starting point for the Sandy Bay hiking trail.

It's best not to expect anything. It's more than a 20-minute walk from the parking lot. The round trip alone is very tiring. About 90% of the people you'll find there are elderly men. There's no point in going there expecting anything.
