The honest summary: Metsovo is a stone-built Aromanian (Vlach) mountain town of a few thousand people, and it has no gay bars, clubs, saunas or LGBTQ+ events. It is a good quiet base for a couple who want snow, cheese, wine and mountain walks. If you want a scene, Thessaloniki is the realistic option, about two and a half hours east.
Legal in one line: Same-sex sex has been legal in Greece since 1951, legal gender recognition came in 2017, and same-sex civil marriage and joint adoption have been legal since February 2024.
What Metsovo is like
Metsovo sits at about 1,150 metres in the Pindus range of Epirus, just off the Egnatia Odos motorway (A2) between Ioannina and Kalambaka. The old town is a tight grid of slate roofs and stone mansions around a central square with plane trees, tavernas and cheese shops. It is busiest on winter weekends and Greek holidays, when families drive up from Ioannina, Thessaloniki and Athens for the snow. Outside those peaks it is very quiet in the evenings.
This is a traditional, church-going mountain community. People are used to tourists and you are unlikely to meet hostility, but locals notice outsiders, and same-sex couples who hold hands on the square will get looks. Most visitors treat it the way Greek couples do: a weekend of good food and fresh air, with affection kept for the hotel room.
Where to Stay
Where to stay
All of the accommodation we list here is mainstream. None of it is gay-owned or gay-marketed, but these are established hotels that take bookings from anyone. Archontiko Metsovo, Aroma Dryos, Hotel Kassaros and Hotel Adonis are all inside the old town and walkable to the square. Apostolos, Asteri and Acropolis are on the upper side of town near Tositsa Street. Katogi Averoff sits beside the Katogi Averoff winery. Grand Forest is a large resort at the motorway interchange, and La Munte is in Anilio, next to the ski area a few kilometres away; you need a car for both. Book ahead for December to March weekends.
Things to do
The Averoff Gallery (Museum of Neohellenic Art), founded by Evangelos Averoff, holds one of the better collections of 19th- and 20th-century Greek painting outside Athens. The Tositsa mansion houses the folk art museum, a reconstruction of an 18th-century Metsovo mansion. Katogi Averoff runs tastings at its winery. Metsovone, the local smoked cheese, is sold in shops around the square.
In winter there are three small ski areas close by: Karakoli (just outside town on the old road to Trikala), Profitis Ilias and Anilio. In summer the same slopes are used for walking, and the Valia Calda section of Pindus National Park is to the north.
Day trips
Ioannina is about 55 km west, roughly 45 to 50 minutes on the Egnatia. It has the lake, the castle and Ali Pasha's old town. The Meteora monasteries at Kalambaka are about 60 km east, a little over an hour by car. The Zagori villages and the Vikos Gorge are around an hour and a half north-west.
Is there anything LGBTQ+ nearby?
Not in Metsovo itself. Ioannina is a university city and has held a self-organised Pride in recent years; a 2025 University of Ioannina thesis documents its second and third editions. We could not confirm a dedicated gay bar in Ioannina, and dates for the next Pride had not been announced at the time of writing. Thessaloniki has the nearest real scene, with gay bars and a Pride in June. Dating apps work here, but in a town this small expect a near-empty grid and mostly people passing through.
Closed or changed
No gay venue has ever been documented in Metsovo. An older version of this page named a "Pilio Hotel" among the town's accommodation; we found no hotel by that name in Metsovo, so it has been removed.
Practical tips
Ioannina Airport (IOA) is the closest, about 50 km away, with mostly domestic flights from Athens. Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) has many more international flights and is about two and a half hours by car. KTEL buses connect Metsovo with Ioannina and Trikala, but a rental car is far more practical. In winter, carry snow chains. There are bank ATMs in town and most hotels take cards, but some tavernas and shops prefer cash.
