Goiânia in the dry season is all red dust, wide numbered avenues and ipê trees flaring pink and yellow against a white sky. By mid-afternoon the heat sits on the city like a lid, sertanejo leaks out of car windows, and the pamonharias fill up with people taking coffee and steamed corn. It sounds like the last place you'd want a steam room, but much of the city's gay life happens behind sauna doors, between the cold shower, the bar and the cabins. Goiânia's scene is small and local: two old-school men's saunas in Setor Central and a newer one with pools in Setor Sul. Prices are low, upkeep is uneven, and renovations come and go. Here's what we could confirm for 2026.
Legal in one line: Brazil has had marriage equality since 2013, and since 2019 homophobia has been punishable as a form of racism. Goiás is a conservative, agricultural state, so expect discretion on the street and freedom behind the sauna door.
Setor Central: the two classics
Setor Central is Goiânia's planned Art Deco core, fanning out from Praça Cívica. Its two long-running saunas are a short ride apart, both for men, both with a dark room and private cabins, and both with a loyal local crowd that skews older. By day the streets are busy with shops and offices; after dark they empty out, so come and go by Uber or 99.
Thermas Botafogo · Alameda Botafogo 42, Setor Central
Spartacus calls it the biggest sauna in the city, and lists 300 lockers, a dry sauna and steam room, a full bar with a food menu, massage, private rooms, a dark room and a small gym room, and there's a labyrinth too. Recent visitors also mention a barber on site. The company behind it has been registered at this address since 1996, according to Brazil's federal business register. Spartacus gives the hours as Monday to Friday 14:00–23:00, Saturday 13:00–23:00 and Sunday 13:00–22:00.
Our take from 2025–2026 reviews: mostly positive on atmosphere, mixed on upkeep. Visitors consistently praise the polite staff, the snacks and a relaxed, safe feel, and a run of March 2026 reviews calls it clean. The recurring complaints are slow service at the desk and the bar, a dry sauna that doesn't always heat up, and the odd lapse in housekeeping, such as dirty towels in a locker in June 2026. Entry was around R$45 in 2025. Opening hours aren't always kept (one 2024 visitor found it shut), so phone (62) 3941-2062 before a special trip.

Sauna Très Chic · Rua 21, 71, Setor Central (opposite Banana Shopping)
A two-storey house. Spartacus describes the ground floor as a bar, TV lounge, lockers, showers, toilets and the steam and dry saunas, and upstairs as a video room, smoking area, dark room and private rooms; there's a terrace too. It lists the hours as 14:00–22:00. A visitor in August 2025 paid R$45 entry, and in May 2026 another paid R$10 for a can of beer. Condoms and lube are sold, not given away, so bring your own.
Our take from 2025–2026 reviews: a good, cosy sauna going through an uneven renovation. Most visitors find it clean and spacious, with a properly hot steam room, but from August 2025 into early 2026 reviews also describe building work, dark areas, an unclear exit and flooding after heavy rain in December 2025, and the dry sauna was reported running below 60°C in February 2026. Reviews kept coming in April and May 2026, so it appears to be open, but call (62) 3212-0573 to check which areas are working. The crowd is mostly older regulars, with younger men on some days.
Setor Sul: Acqua Sul
Sauna Acqua Sul · entrance via Praça Wilton Valente Chaves, Setor Sul
The newcomer, described by a January 2026 visitor as "the new hotspot", and the city's best-rated sauna on Google when we checked (4.6 from 21 reviews). Setor Sul is a residential district just south of the centre, known for its small internal squares, and the entrance is on one of them. Reviews from late 2025 and early 2026 describe hot and cold pools, including a large one, a steam room, cabins, a bar with good service, a masseur, clean bathrooms, free condoms and lube, and a party space with a stage; one visitor mentions DJs and a weekly programme. It's "great for dating and meeting cool people", says one regular.
Our take from 2025–2026 reviews: the most consistently positive of Goiânia's saunas, with only minor complaints. It's smaller than the Centro saunas and, according to one detailed review, has no dry sauna, only steam; other visitors mention warm beer, a smelly changing room on one visit and parts of the space under renovation in November 2025. We found no published prices, hours or website, so message or call (62) 99702-5474 first.
Not recommended or out of date: Sauna Tamandaré in Setor Oeste still appears in some listings, but recent reviews describe it as neglected and one says it isn't aimed at a gay crowd, so we don't recommend it. We found no confirmed sauna closures in Goiânia for 2025–2026, and the R$25 entry price still shown by some guidebooks for Thermas Botafogo and Très Chic is out of date.
How Goiânia's saunas work
- The routine: pay at the desk, get a towel and a locker key, change, shower, then move between the steam room, the bar and the cabins.
- Locker and phone: lock your phone and wallet in the locker, not the cabin, and leave valuables at the hotel.
- Garotos: as in most Brazilian saunas, garotos de programa (male escorts, or GPs) may be working among the clients; a 2026 review of Thermas Botafogo mentions them. In Brazil, adults selling sex is not itself a crime (pimping and running a brothel are), and in saunas it's an accepted, low-key part of the scene. If a GP approaches you and you're not interested, a smile and "não, obrigado" (no, thank you) or "tô só relaxando" (I'm just relaxing) is enough; no explanation is needed. If you are interested, agree the price and what's included before you go to a cabin. Some houses use towel colours to tell clients and garotos apart; ask at the desk if anything is unclear.
- Consent: dark rooms and cabins run on the same rule as anywhere: you can always say no, step back or leave.
- Bring your own condoms and lube; Très Chic sells them, and only Acqua Sul is reported to hand them out free.
- Getting around: use Uber or 99 door to door, especially at night. Order the car from inside the sauna and step out when it arrives.
- Numbered streets: most streets in Goiânia are numbers, and the same number can repeat across districts. Always give the driver the setor (Setor Central, Setor Sul) as well as the street.
- Paying: cards are widely accepted. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, is everywhere but normally needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number. A few foreign wallets can now pay Pix QR codes (Argentine Mercado Pago accounts, for example), so ask your bank; otherwise carry a card and some cash in small notes for the bar.
- Apps: Hornet is big in Brazil, often bigger with locals than Grindr, so install both. Meet in a bar or the sauna first, and never send a Pix to someone you've only met online.
- Before and after: for a drink first, try Babylon Liberty Pub in Setor Central, or Roxy, a long-running club on Rua 87 in Setor Sul, a short ride from Acqua Sul, with pop, karaoke and themed party nights. Recent reviews of Roxy are mixed: people like the crowd and the atmosphere but complain about slow, crowded bar service, so check its Instagram (@roxygoiania) for open nights. See all Goiânia gay bars.
- sauna / termas: bathhouse
- sauna seca / sauna a vapor: dry sauna / steam room
- armário, toalha, chinelo: locker, towel, flip-flop
- cabine: private cabin
- quarto escuro: dark room
- garoto de programa (or GP): male escort
- camisinha: condom
- uai and trem: the all-purpose central-Brazil exclamation ("well", "huh") and "thing" (any thing at all)
- não, obrigado: no, thank you
Stay indoors. Parque Botafogo has a long reputation for cruising after dark, but sex in a public place is a crime in Brazil (ato obsceno, Article 233 of the Penal Code), and robbery after anonymous night-time hookups is a known risk in Brazilian city centres. Thermas Botafogo is less than 100 metres away. See our Goiânia cruising guide for more.
Practical tips
Pride, health and local flavour
Pride: the Parada do Orgulho LGBTQIA+ de Goiânia is held in September. The 31st edition was on Sunday 13 September 2026, under the theme "Nada sobre nós sem nós" ("Nothing about us without us"), with events at Praça Cívica from midday and the march leaving at 17:00 along Avenidas Araguaia, Paranaíba and Tocantins. It's organised by Parada-GO. Some calendars list the 2027 parade for 12 September, but the organisers hadn't confirmed it when we checked. In June, the free Esquenta LGBT+ at Praça Universitária (its 44th edition was on 28 June 2026) warms things up. If you're coming for Pride weekend, book your hotel early.
Health: Brazil's public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to one of Goiânia's 24-hour UPA or CAIS emergency units, or the state tropical diseases hospital (HDT), and ask for PEP. For PrEP, the Centro de Saúde Cidade Jardim and CAIS Jardim Novo Mundo take walk-ins on weekdays.
The goiano table: after the sauna, do as locals do and stop at a pamonharia for a hot pamonha: fresh corn paste cooked in its own husk, sweet or savoury, usually with melting cheese inside, or à moda, with cheese, sausage and chilli, and a coffee on the side. Goiás takes it seriously enough to have a state Pamonha Day, on 3 February. Or order rice with pequi, the cerrado fruit whose smell you'll either love or hate. Scrape the flesh off gently with your teeth: never bite down, because the stone underneath is covered in fine spines.

How much does a gay sauna cost in Goiânia?
Visitors in 2025 paid around R$45 entry at Thermas Botafogo and Très Chic; Acqua Sul doesn't publish prices. Drinks are extra, and the R$25 still shown in some guidebooks is out of date.
