On the night of 5 February 1981, Metro Toronto Police carried out simultaneous raids on four Toronto bathhouses — the Richmond Street Health Emporium at 250 Richmond Street West, the Barracks, the Roman II and the Club Baths. In what remains the largest single-night mass arrest in Canadian history at the time, 286 men were charged as "found-ins" of a common bawdy-house; the raids became known as Operation Soap. The response was Canada's equivalent of Stonewall. On the evening of 6 February, roughly 3,000 people marched from the intersection of Yonge and Wellesley to the 52 Division police station on Dundas Street West, breaking through police barricades. Follow-up protests through February drew larger crowds; the 27 June 1981 rally at Grange Park drew an estimated 5,000 and is considered the first Toronto Pride march (though not so-named until later). The legal consequence was mixed: of the 286 charged, 89 were convicted, most on minor charges; the Right to Privacy Committee formed at the 519 Community Centre coordinated the defense. The political consequence was decisive: the raids radicalised Toronto's LGBTQ+ community, forced the amalgamated Metro Toronto Police to abandon the enforcement pattern of bathhouse raids, and produced the sustained infrastructure — Toronto AIDS Committee, Right to Privacy Committee, The Body Politic newspaper's political turn — that shaped Canadian queer activism through the 1980s. The Richmond Street site itself is now the Bank of Nova Scotia office tower; a City of Toronto Heritage Preservation Services plaque installed in 2016 on the exterior wall notes the site's history.
