Port-au-Prince is not safely visitable in 2026. Gangs control the overwhelming majority of the capital, over a million people are displaced, the US advisory has sat at Level 4 'Do Not Travel' since 2023, US flights remain banned, and regional carriers have suspended service. No honest travel content can be written on top of that, so we won't: this page documents the situation and the community that persists inside it.

The legal irony

Haiti never criminalized same-sex relations — legal since independence in 1804. But the 2025 penal code stripped the LGBTIQ protections drafted in 2020 after religious pushback, leaving legality without protection, in a state that currently cannot protect anyone.

What survives

Kay Trans Haiti still operates in Port-au-Prince — a shelter and lifeline for trans Haitians, one of the only physical safe spaces left, verified operating through 2026. Kouraj, the movement's historic flagship founded in 2011 (whose president Charlot Jeudy was found dead in 2019, a case never solved), cannot be verified as currently operational — we record it here as history that mattered. Armed groups specifically target queer people; the community survives through private networks under conditions few movements anywhere have faced.
