About this place Menen Hotel

The Menen Hotel is one of the very few hotels on Nauru and the one most visitors end up in. It sits on the east side of the island, a short drive from Yaren and the airport, since Nauru is only about 20 km around. It is a mainstream hotel listed as gay-friendly; there is no gay scene on the island. Expect basic standards: the 3.7 Google rating from roughly 285 reviews reflects dated rooms alongside a lack of alternatives. Same-sex relations were decriminalised in Nauru in 2016, but the society is small and conservative, so keep things low-key. Book ahead, as capacity is limited.

The glory days of this hotel seem to have ended a very, very long time ago. We were told that our room had been “renovated” or “refreshed”, but honestly, it was difficult to see what exactly had been refreshed. Perhaps the new fridge and microwave were part of the renovation, but the overall condition of the room was still extremely poor. We actually had to ask reception whether we had received a renovated room, and they confirmed that apparently we had. Unfortunately, the hotel makes a very poor impression both from the outside and inside. There was also a very unpleasant smell in our room as well as around the reception area. Some renovation work appears to be taking place, but so far it certainly has not produced the results you would expect. The most disturbing experience happened around midnight, when two young men suddenly entered our room using what appeared to be a master key. We have no idea why they entered or what their intentions were. When they realized we were inside, they quickly left. Whatever the explanation, having strangers able to enter an occupied guest room in the middle of the night is completely unacceptable and made us feel extremely unsafe. The door itself also felt very insecure and unstable, which only added to our concerns about security. Overall, we did not feel safe, comfortable or relaxed here. The condition of the room, unpleasant smell, poor maintenance and, above all, the midnight incident with unauthorized access to our room made this an extremely disappointing experience. Unfortunately, based on our stay, we absolutely cannot recommend this hotel.
