Reykjavik Bear - RVKBear for short - is Iceland's annual bear festival, the successor to the long-running Bears on Ice gatherings that put Reykjavik on the bear-travel map. Every early September a few hundred bears, cubs and admirers from across Europe and North America take over the world's northernmost capital for four days that mix nightlife with proper Icelandic adventure.
The formula is what makes it special: alongside the welcome party, club nights and the Mr. Reykjavik Bear contest, the official program sends the whole pack out of town - a Golden Circle tour past Geysir and Gullfoss, a group soak in a geothermal lagoon, and city passes covering the Lava Show and FlyOver Iceland. It is one of the few bear events anywhere built around daytime sightseeing as much as the parties.
Home base is downtown Reykjavik, with events at venues around the 101 district. The 2026 edition runs September 3-6; registration and the full program are at reykjavikbear.is.

Reykjavik is a small city and hotels fill up quickly, especially during the event. Book your accommodation well in advance.
Volcanic Activity
While volcanic activity is part of Iceland's nature and has not impacted daily life or travel, it has influenced some festival planning. The Blue Lagoon is not being prioritized as the main lagoon visit this year as a precaution.
Airport Transfer Discount

Dietary Needs
If you have special dietary requirements, notify the organizers by emailing growl@reykjavikbear.is. They will do their best to accommodate preferences, but severe allergies or intolerances should be communicated in advance.
