The honest summary: Detroit has eight gay bars and clubs, and no two of them are on the same street, apart from the two under Menjo's roof. There is no strip to walk. You drive or rideshare between a north-side complex, a west-side trio, a newer cocktail bar in Southwest Detroit and a couple of outliers. Most of these places have been open for decades, have cheap drinks and stage drag, and they're busiest Thursday to Saturday. If you want to walk from bar to bar, go to Ferndale instead.
North side: the Menjo's complex
Menjo's Complex
928 W McNichols Rd, by Palmer Park. Menjo's has been a gay bar since 1974, longer than any other in Detroit (Out x Out, Pride Source). It's three spaces in one: the main bar and dance floor, the Detroit Eagle, and Olympus Hall for drag and the odd Rocky Horror night. Google lists it as open Thursday to Sunday, about 9pm to 2am. It has its own parking lot.

The Detroit Eagle
Inside Menjo's, same address. This is the leather and bear bar, darker and more masculine than the main room, with fetish nights on the calendar. The Eagle's Facebook page has the current schedule.
West side: West Warren and Greenfield

Gigi's
16920 W Warren Ave. Gigi's has been gay-owned since 1973. Drag cabaret runs downstairs and the dance bar is upstairs. Google reviewers keep mentioning the friendly door staff. It's in Detroit's Warrendale area, near the Dearborn line, but it isn't in Dearborn.
Adam's Apple
18931 W Warren Ave. A trans woman owns this small neighbourhood bar, and it's the base for the Detroit TG Invasion weekends (Transgender Michigan). It's cash only, and Google lists it as open from midday to 2am daily.
HALO Bar & Lounge
8070 Greenfield Rd. This was the Hayloft Saloon from 1980 until new owners rebranded it in 2024. The bar draws gay men and bears, and has a back patio and strong pours. Metro Times readers voted it Best Karaoke in 2025.
Everywhere else
El Trombone
4654 W Vernor Hwy, Southwest Detroit. The Detroit Optimist Society group (Sugar House, Bad Luck Bar) opened it in the former Mutiny Tiki space. Metro Times reported that the bartender behind it wanted "a really nice, local gay bar". It serves cocktails, canned beer and seltzers, with DJs, drag and karaoke. It's the most polished room on this list.
Escape Lounge
19404 Sherwood St, east side. A gay-owned men's after-hours bar, formerly Stingers Lounge, listed by Pride Source and Travel Gay. We found no 2025-26 press coverage, so check its social pages before you go.
Inuendo
744 E Savannah St, Highland Park, the separate small city surrounded by Detroit. It's a hip-hop and R&B club popular with Black and other queer people of colour. Travel Gay lists it as open Wednesday to Sunday from about 10pm. Google reviewers mention cheap drinks, bar food and a big enclosed patio.
Just outside Detroit
- SOHO, 205 W Nine Mile, Ferndale. The suburb's one dedicated gay bar, open since 2004, a block from the Affirmations center. Nine Mile is the only stretch in the metro area where you can walk between queer-friendly bars and restaurants.
- Pronto and Five15, South Washington Ave, Royal Oak. They sit side by side. Pronto has been a gay lounge since 1991, and Five15 is known for drag queen bingo.
- Woodward Bar & Grill (6426 Woodward). This was the city's oldest gay bar until a fire destroyed it in June 2022 (Pride Source, WXYZ, CBS). It has not reopened, though older listings still show it.
- Hayloft Saloon is now HALO.
- Stingers Lounge is now Escape Lounge.
- Flaming Embers on Woodward closed within weeks of opening in 2023.
- Club Gold Coast is a male strip club, not a gay bar in the usual sense, and we couldn't confirm it's still open.
- Bars close at 2am. Thursday to Saturday are the real nights.
- Bring cash. Adam's Apple takes nothing else.
- Expect 15-25 minutes by car between clusters. Uber and Lyft are easy to get in the city.
- Everywhere is 21+, and you will be asked for ID.
- Smaller bars post their hours on Facebook or Instagram, not on websites.

FAQ
Which Detroit gay bar should I go to first?
Menjo's. It's the oldest and biggest, and the Eagle is in the same building, so you get two bars in one stop.
Is there a lesbian bar in Detroit?
Not a permanent one. Lesbian Social Detroit throws regular parties, lately at IO Rooftop in Corktown.
Is Woodward Bar & Grill open?
No. It burned down in June 2022.
Can I walk between Detroit's gay bars?
No. They're miles apart. Ferndale's Nine Mile is the walkable option.
