Gay Ferndale 2026

The honest summary: Ferndale is a small city of about 19,000 people just north of Detroit's Eight Mile Road, and it has been the centre of queer life in metro Detroit for more than two decades. It has one gay bar, SoHo, and one of the biggest LGBTQ+ community centres in the Midwest, Affirmations, both on the same stretch of West Nine Mile Road. There is no bathhouse, no club strip and no gay hotel. What it has is a walkable downtown, a city where voters approved LGBTQ+ protections back in 2006, a free Pride festival every year, and Detroit and Royal Oak's bars a short drive away.

Where the scene is

Almost everything is in Downtown Ferndale, the few blocks of West Nine Mile Road running west from Woodward Avenue. SoHo, Affirmations and the Ringwald Theatre are all within a two-minute walk of each other, and Ferndale Pride closes this same stretch of Nine Mile every year. Woodward Avenue itself carries the bigger venues: The Loving Touch, the Magic Bag and a row of bars and breweries.

The scene grew as LGBTQ+ residents and businesses moved north from Detroit into Ferndale's bungalow streets. Affirmations moved into its own building on Nine Mile in 2007, and Craig Covey served as the city's first openly gay mayor from 2008 to 2011.

The bar

• SoHo (205 W Nine Mile Rd) has been Ferndale's gay bar since 2004 and is the only one left in town. It's a low-key martini and cocktail bar with a pool table, a small dance area and a few seats outside. Its own listings put karaoke on Sundays and Wednesdays and a Tuesday wine night called Wines on Nine, and Google also mentions quiz and drag-bingo nights. Google lists 4pm to 2am on weekdays, from 2pm on Saturday and noon to midnight on Sunday.

Plenty of other bars on Nine Mile and Woodward are relaxed about who walks in, but they are straight bars, and we don't list them as gay bars. For more nights out, Royal Oak, the next city north, has Pronto! and Five15, and Detroit has Menjo's, the Eagle and the city's only bathhouse, Body Zone.

Queer nights at other venues

Some non-gay venues in Ferndale host queer nights. The Loving Touch (22634 Woodward Ave), a live-music room, has put on Pride parties with drag and burlesque, a women's Halloween social and the Party Iconic dance party, most recently in August 2026. The Emory on Woodward has run a monthly drag brunch with Divas of Detroit, with proceeds going to Ferndale Pride; the latest listing we found was from 2024, so check before you go. None of these is a gay venue; watch their social media for the next date.

Community, culture and shopping

• Affirmations (290 W Nine Mile Rd) was founded in 1989 and is often described as Michigan's largest LGBTQ+ community centre. Its calendar runs most days: discussion and support groups, recovery meetings, youth and senior drop-ins, free HIV and STI testing, and a food pantry. It is the best place to find out what's on locally. Google lists 10am to 8pm Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 10am to 3:30pm on Friday, closed Sunday.
• The Ringwald Theatre, an LGBTQ+ theatre company, has performed inside the Affirmations building since fall 2021. Shows run in short seasons; tickets are sold through its website.
• C&J Hammer Hard Accessories (753 W Nine Mile Rd) calls itself an LGBTQ store geared toward gay men: underwear, harnesses and leather gear, open daily.
• Transcend the Binary, a trans peer-support group, is also based at Affirmations.

Pride and events

• Ferndale Pride has been held since 2011 and fills West Nine Mile between Woodward and Livernois with stages and stalls for a day. It is free, and its organisers call it the largest free LGBTQ+ festival in Michigan. The 2026 edition was on Saturday 30 May. In 2027 it moves to Saturday 7 August, because the city is repaving West Nine Mile in the spring.
• Transgender Pride in the Park, run by Transgender Michigan, held its 26th edition at Martin Road Park in Ferndale on 22 August 2026. The 2027 date has not been announced at the time of writing.
• Motor City Pride, the region's biggest Pride, takes place at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit on 12 and 13 June 2027. It was held in Ferndale until 2010, which is why Ferndale started its own festival the year after.
• Hotter Than July, Detroit's Black Pride, is held in late July. The 2027 dates have not been announced at the time of writing.

Week to week, the Ferndale events page mostly lists Affirmations groups, plus the odd night at SoHo.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

• Pronto! and Five15 are often listed as Ferndale bars. They are in Royal Oak, a few kilometres north up Woodward.
• Menjo's, the Eagle and Body Zone are in Detroit, not Ferndale.
• Motor City Pride left Ferndale for Hart Plaza in 2011.
• Just 4 Us (gifts and books) and A Woman's Prerogative (a feminist bookshop) still turn up in old guides. We couldn't find either one open.
• A "June 13" Ferndale Pride date that circulated for 2026 belongs to Ferndale, California.



Safety

Downtown Ferndale is one of the easiest places in Michigan to be openly queer. One thing to know: in November 2025 federal prosecutors charged suspects over a foiled Halloween attack plot; the FBI said they had scouted LGBTQ+-friendly bars around Woodward and Nine Mile. Nothing happened, and SoHo and the city responded publicly. Use ordinary city sense late at night, and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.

Practical tips

• Getting there: Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) is about 45 to 50 km (28 to 30 miles) away, roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car. Downtown Detroit is about 16 km (10 miles) south down Woodward.
• Buses: SMART's FAST Woodward express (routes 461 and 462) and the 460 local run along Woodward and stop at Nine Mile. The QLINE streetcar stays inside Detroit and doesn't reach Ferndale.
• Where to stay: Ferndale has very few hotels. The Lotus Inn and a Baymont sit on Eight Mile at the southern edge of town; most visitors stay in Royal Oak, Detroit or along the freeways and drive in. See our Ferndale hotels page.
• Pride weekend: parking near Nine Mile fills early. Arrive by rideshare or bus if you can.
