The honest summary: Mol is a lake-and-heath town of about 38,700 people in the Kempen, the north-eastern corner of Antwerp province. It has no gay bar, club or sauna, and it doesn't pretend to. People come for Zilvermeer, the cycling routes and the holiday parks. For nightlife you take the train to Antwerp, 55 minutes away.

Legal in one line

Belgium legalised same-sex marriage in 2003 and adoption in 2006, and anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity. Holding hands in Mol is unremarkable.

Where Mol is

Mol is in Antwerp province, not Limburg. The Limburg border is just east of the municipality, which is why Lommel and Hasselt feel close. The municipality is big (114 km²) and spread out, with a compact centre around the Markt and outlying villages such as Mol-Sluis, Ezaart, Millegem, Rauw and Postel. The big local employers are research centres: SCK CEN (nuclear research) and VITO. There is also a European School, so you will hear English and other languages more than in a typical Kempen town.

The gay scene: there isn't one in Mol

We checked Google Maps, Yelp, the Flemish LGBTQ+ press and the usual gay travel guides. None of them lists an operating gay or queer venue in Mol or the neighbouring towns of Geel, Balen, Dessel and Retie. Cafés and restaurants in the centre are mainstream. Nothing we found suggests any of them is unwelcoming, but none runs queer nights.

Closed or changed

Café Cher (Sint-Pieterstraat 5) still appears on Google Maps with the category "gay bar", but Google marks it as permanently closed and we found no other trace of it. Don't plan an evening around it.

The nearest real scenes

Antwerp is the nearest, with direct trains on line 15 taking about 55 minutes. The bars aren't on one street any more. The old strip around Van Schoonhovenstraat by Centraal station emptied out a decade ago. Today the venues are spread between Antwerpen-Noord (Café Strange on Dambruggestraat) and Het Eilandje (Hessenhuis on Falconrui, Boots on Van Aerdtstraat). Antwerp's gay sauna, 't Herenhuis, is in Berchem.

Brussels takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. A handful of direct weekday peak trains run to Brussels-North; otherwise you change trains. The scene there is concentrated around Saint-Jacques (Rue du Marché au Charbon).

Hasselt, at the other end of line 15, has Limburg Pride in July and Regenbooghuis Limburg, the province's rainbow house.

Community in the Kempen

The Kempen's LGBTQ+ organising is based in Turnhout, about 25 km north-west. G!F Kempen, founded in 2025, organised Turnhout's IDAHOT gathering at De Warande in May 2026. In 2026 the region also got its first Pride: Love Out Loud – Pride in de Kempen, held 5–6 September on the Kasteelplein in Turnhout with free entry. A 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.

In Mol itself, the municipality has hung the rainbow flag for 17 May, the international day against homophobia and transphobia, in past years. A local group, Voilà Mol, used to organise a flag-raising, but we couldn't confirm it is still active.

Pride and events

Mol doesn't have its own Pride. The nearest dates are:
Brussels Pride: mid-May (Saturday 16 May in 2026, the 30th edition).
Limburg Pride, Hasselt: July (12 July in 2026).
Antwerp Pride: early August (5–9 August in 2026).
Love Out Loud, Turnhout: early September (first edition 2026).

Where to stay

Mol's accommodation is mainstream: the Corbie hotel by the station, small hotels such as Hotel Huron and Hippocampus, a few B&Bs, and the large holiday parks by the lakes (Sunparks Kempense Meren, EuroParcs Zilverstrand). None of them markets itself to LGBTQ+ guests, and we have no reports of problems. Belgian law forbids refusing a same-sex couple a double room. If nightlife is the point of your trip, stay in Antwerp and come to Mol for a day on the lakes.

What to do

Zilvermeer has been a provincial recreation park since 1959. It has a white-sand beach and swimming in summer, and divers explore its underwater museum. Zilverstrand, the second lake, has an indoor pool. Both lakes formed where silica sand was dug out, and the white sand is the reason the water looks so clear.

The Jakob Smitsmuseum in Mol-Sluis shows the work of the painter who lived and worked there. Postel Abbey, a Norbertine abbey founded in the 12th century, is in the north-east of the municipality near the Dutch border.

The nature reserves worth walking are Buitengoor–Sluismeer–Meergoor east of the centre, De Maat and Den Diel, and the Belse Heide. The Lommelse Sahara, a sand landscape in Lommel (Limburg), is a short drive or bike ride east.

Getting around

Mol station is on railway line 15 (Antwerp–Lier–Herentals–Geel–Mol–Hasselt), which runs roughly twice an hour. The Kempen is flat and covered by the Flemish cycle-junction network (fietsknooppunten), so a bike is the easiest way to reach the lakes and reserves. Graspop Metal Meeting, in neighbouring Dessel each June, fills every bed in the area, so book well ahead if you visit then.

A few words of Dutch

Hallo / dag: hello. Dank u wel: thank you. Waar is het station?: where is the station? Holebi: the Flemish umbrella word for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Regenboog: rainbow.

At a glance

Province: Antwerp (Kempen).
Population: about 38,700 (2025).
Gay bars, clubs or saunas: none.
Nearest scene: Antwerp, 55 minutes by direct train.
Nearest Pride: Love Out Loud in Turnhout (September), Antwerp Pride (August).
Best for: lakes, cycling, quiet weekends.

Preguntas frecuentes
