The honest summary: Victoria is the small capital of the Seychelles, on the north-east coast of Mahé. About 30,000 people live in the Central region around it (2022 census). It's a busy market and ferry town by day and quiet after dark. There is no gay bar, club, sauna or drag night here or on any other island, and there has never been a Pride march. What you'll find is a legal, low-key country, one small LGBTQ+ organisation and plenty of mainstream hotels that take same-sex couples like any other guests.
Legal in one line
Sex between men has been legal since the National Assembly repealed Penal Code section 151 on 18 May 2016 (in force from June 2016), and sex between women was never a crime. The age of consent is 15 for everyone. The Employment Act has banned discrimination on sexual orientation since 2006, and a September 2024 amendment made anti-LGBTQ+ motives an aggravating factor in hate crimes. There is no marriage, civil union or legal gender change.
What the scene actually looks like
We checked misterb&b, Travel Gay, Spartacus, Expert Africa and FlyerTalk, plus Seychelles media in English, French and Kreol. None of them lists a gay venue anywhere in the country in 2025 or 2026. misterb&b sums it up as no gay bars, no gay clubs, no gay saunas and no Pride parade. Map searches for "gay bar Victoria" bring up ordinary town bars, hotel bars and Beau Vallon beach bars, and none of them presents itself as queer. LGBTQ+ social life is private: friends' houses, beach afternoons and the dating apps.
LGBTI Sey LGBTI Sey is the country's only LGBTQ+ organisation. Activists started it in 2015, it was registered in June 2016, and it has about 200 members. Its leaders met President Ramkalawan at State House in July 2022. That May it ran the "Viv, Lanmour, Respe" (Live, Love, Respect) IDAHOBIT campaign on TV, radio and buses, and in June 2022 it ran the first LGBTI film festival, with screenings at Deepam Cinema in Victoria. There's no public office and the old website is offline. Reach them through Facebook (LGBTISey) or Instagram (@lgbtisey).
Pride & Events
Pride and events
No Pride march has ever been held in the Seychelles, and we found no public IDAHOBIT or Pride event in 2023-2026. Nothing has been announced for 2027 at the time of writing. If something is planned, LGBTI Sey's social pages will have it first.
Where to Stay
Where to stay
We list nine mainstream hotels within reach of Victoria. Eden Bleu on Eden Island, 3.5 km from the centre, is the only one we found that has openly courted LGBTQ+ guests: it hosted a UK LGBTI press trip with the Seychelles Tourism Board, featured in DIVA magazine in 2019. Hilltop Boutique Hotel on Serret Road and Blue Hill Guest House on Sans Souci Road are the closest to town. Beau Vallon, about 5 km away over the hill, has the Berjaya and Savoy resorts and most of Mahé's beach bars and restaurants. Club Med sits on its own island, Sainte Anne, in the marine park offshore. Avani+ Barbarons is on the quieter west coast, Loversnest is self-catering near the airport, and Papaya Guest House is up on La Misère Road. Hotels here host international couples every day, but public affection is best kept low-key, as it is for Seychellois couples too.
Gone but still Googled
Katiolo, the disco at Anse Faure near the airport, comes up in "gay club Mahé" map searches. It's a mainstream club (open since 1974, reopened in December 2019) with no LGBTQ+ link, so we don't list it. Old guides talking about a "gay-friendly district" in Victoria or Bel Ombre are describing something that doesn't exist.
Practical tips
- Getting in: Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) is about 11 km south-east of Victoria. Taxis are the easy option; the bus is cheap but slow with luggage.
- Entry: no visa, but every visitor needs an online Travel Authorisation before flying (from €10 for the standard 24-hour service).
- Buses: all Mahé routes start from the terminal in central Victoria. Travel reports put fares at SCR 10-15 (cashless is cheaper), with services roughly 05:30-19:30.
- Ferries: the Cat Cocos fast ferry to Praslin takes about an hour from the Inter Island Quay.
- In town: the Clock Tower (1903, restored in 2024), the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market and the Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar temple are all within a few minutes' walk. The Botanical Gardens at Mont Fleuri open 08:00-16:30.
- Basics: Seychellois rupee (SCR), Type G plugs, emergency number 999, time UTC+4 all year.
- Sexual health: HASO, the HIV/AIDS support organisation, has offered testing and counselling for 30 years, and the Ministry of Health's Communicable Disease Control Unit runs the public service. Bring PrEP with you; we couldn't confirm local access.
A few words in Kreol
Bonzour (hello), Mersi (thank you), Viv, Lanmour, Respe (live, love, respect, the slogan of the 2022 IDAHOBIT campaign).
At a glance
- Gay bars, clubs, saunas: none
- Pride: never held; nothing announced for 2027
- LGBTQ+ organisation: LGBTI Sey (online only)
- Legal since: 2016; employment protection since 2006
- Hotels listed: 9 mainstream, Eden Bleu the only one with LGBTQ+ outreach
- Airport: SEZ, 11 km
