Sobre este lugar Jane Addams Hull-House Museum

Jane Addams co-founded Hull-House in 1889 and turned it into the engine of American social reform: child-labor laws, public health campaigns, labor rights and the settlement-house movement all ran through this address. In 1931 she became the first American woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The reason Hull-House belongs on a queer heritage map is a relationship the history books long footnoted away. Addams' life partner was Mary Rozet Smith, whom she met at Hull-House; for roughly forty years they shared a bed, traveled together, owned a home together, and wrote letters in which Addams addressed Smith as "dearest" and signed herself yours "'til death." Historians such as Lillian Faderman describe the partnership as one we would call lesbian today, and Addams was inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame in 2008. Refreshingly, the museum itself tells this story head-on — its own interpretation (including a 2022 piece titled "More Than 'Gal Pals'") presents Addams and Smith's partnership as central to her life and work rather than a curiosity. The complex was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965; the original Hull mansion and the Residents' Dining Hall survive (most of the 13-building settlement was demolished for the UIC campus) and operate as a free museum run by the University of Illinois Chicago. Visiting: free admission; open Tuesday-Friday 10am-4:50pm and Saturday 10am-3pm, closed Sunday-Monday; free guided tours Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm with reservation. An easy Blue Line stop, and one of the few National Historic Landmarks anywhere that interprets women's, immigrant and queer history in one house.
