Provincetown Carnival es el mayor evento del calendario gay de Provincetown: una semana de fiestas temáticas, inauguraciones de galería, eventos de disfraces y celebraciones callejeras que culminan en un desfile disfrazado por Commercial Street que reúne a 60.000 personas en un pueblo de 3.000. Se celebra durante la tercera semana de agosto y funciona desde 1978. Cada año tiene un tema —en el pasado: Hollywood, superhéroes, realeza, fondo marino— y los participantes, disfraces y carrozas son expresiones elaboradas de ese tema, del ingenio al espectáculo. El desfile recorre Commercial Street del East End al West End, unos tres kilómetros, con el público apilado de tres y cuatro filas a ambos lados. La semana incluye tea dances oficiales en el Boatslip, noches temáticas en el A-House y el Crown & Anchor, y la multiplicación general de energía propia de 60.000 visitantes llegando a un pueblo construido para 3.000. La Carnival week exige reservar alojamiento con ocho meses de antelación; las tarifas están en su pico anual. Es la mejor expresión de lo que Provincetown hace y que ningún otro sitio de Estados Unidos replica.
