The Pink Flamingo's was one of those last rare cafés where one could taste from a special but homely and original atmosphere, even on one's own. Quirky, eccentric, eclectic and bohemian; it was a remnant of a not-so-distant past when people still went to town to have a nice evening out, in a relaxed environment at a reasonable price and surrounded by good music. I'll never know why it closed, but, I guess the owner thought time had come to go and make place for new blood... or that authorities took exception with certain "unsafe" decorations (aka The Barbie chandeleer)... either way, it shall be remembered as a fun place in our hearts :)
After many successful years Pink Flamingo's closed recently due to problems of noise & neighbors. Unfortunately it will become another apartment block.
If you are of a certain (young) age, if you have never experienced the 'kitsch' decor first time around and are thrilled by the site of Barbie dolls arranged in an 'amusing and witty' manner, and if you need artificial cheap decor to give 'character' to a pub, then Pink Flamingo's is the place for you. If on the other hand, you prefer the beer, the fabric of the building, convivial banter between strangers, (who depart as friends) to provide you with all of the 'character' you need from a pub, then PF's is the place to avoid.
Coming from Hungary this is the closest to a ruined pub we had found. The interior is quirky, the bar staff is cheeky, the beer is good. Had a nice chat with the bartender who introduced us to a couple different types of Belgian beers. Hipster crowd, unique atmosphere, definitely worth a visit.
This is the kind of character bar that no longer exists in Los Angeles, and is quickly disappearing from other cities. Decorated with a genuine warmth and affection for vintage kitsch, it's a really cozy place where you can feel right at home (that is if you have a fondness for vintage knick-knacks, graphics etc). The drinks were really reasonably priced, the bartender was really personable, and the music was amazing. We loved the music - really great old obscure 60's psychedelia etc. They change the decorations regularly - I would love to go back and see what they do next. Of course I'd love to go back to Ghent and spend more time there. If you're tired of the same old bars and long for something with real character, great music & inexpensive booze - please support this business!
Great bar right in the centre, down a side street with interesting shops and restaurants. A mix of locals and tourists. Terrific selection of beers and quirky decor.
I noticed this pub from the street, it's hard not too, and was slightly apprehensive about going in - I'm so glad that I did. Sure it looks a bit like David Bowie on an acid trip has been called in to do the decor, but that adds to the charm of the place. The beer list isn't as extensive as other places that I've been to, but the selection is still solid. To balance out the lack of beer, they also had a cocktail and whisky place. Definitely pop in, even if it's just for a quick drink and a look at all of the quirky decorations.
This is probably one of the tackiest pubs I’ve been to (but then again, I haven’t been to that many). Everything about this pub is really rather wrong, nothing fits, nothing matches, but it’s so bad that it’s good. It definitely adds a certain charm to the pub. Another plus is that it was rather quiet, and seems to be visited by locals, and that the music is great, consisting of mainly classics. I guess tourists don’t know this spot! Just beware though, if you get scared of barbie dolls, avoid this place. Or at least close your eyes upon entering it.
I asked for a croque monsieur but the guy told me that he was maybe too busy. Then, after most of people went away, I asked again for it but he told me he forgot and that he already cleaned the kitchen. COME-ON!!!
Myself and some friends were recommended this bar by a Ghent resident friend, so we stopped by on a Thursday night. The decor is John Waters bonkers, the records playing were excellent, the bar staff were beyond helpful and cool, and if that's not enough- there's a Barbie chandelier!! The drinks were delicious- good generous measures and local rarities. I wish I could move the bar to London!
