Hotel Amistad

Excellent service. Excellent location.

I arrived at the Amistad Amsterdam hotel last Monday (August 11, 2025). Reservation made through Booking.com. Wednesday morning, I took a shower. The hotel employee came to alert me. There was a major flood on the ground floor (in the kitchen/cafeteria) due to my shower. I was asked to change rooms. I inquired about the possibility of a room overlooking the courtyard, but it wasn't available as everything was booked. I was moved to the first floor, below the previous room. I complied. This was still fine with me because the first-floor room was exactly the same as the previous one. Thursday morning, I took a shower...and there was another major flood on the ground floor. The manager then arrived. He lost his temper. He flew into a rage and completely lost control of his emotions. He yelled at me in front of stunned guests. He accused me of damaging the shower twice. He told me to pack my things and leave the hotel within the hour. I was stunned, completely bewildered. I tried to defend myself, but it was no use; the manager wouldn't listen and remained stuck in his paranoid mindset. In 35 years of traveling, I've never experienced anything like this, and I'm at a loss. I had to pay €418 for three nights in another hotel. A nightmare and an unexpected expense. To date, Booking.com has offered me an initial gesture of goodwill (I've been a customer for almost 15 years, I've never caused any problems; I'm considered a good customer who travels regularly): €165. The Booking.com representative (on the phone) acknowledged my good faith... Why damage a shower twice? How can a shower drain cause a flood if the installation is up to code? How can a customer be accused in this way (note: the hotel manager, of course, didn't alert Booking.com...it was only after I called Booking.com that he had to explain himself)? And above all, what would I have gained by tampering with the shower plumbing when my goal, as a tourist, is to fully enjoy my long-awaited vacation? The hotelier refuses to refund the remaining 3 nights, totaling 550 euros. Booking.com is in contact with this manager to ensure he acts professionally. My theories: the two affected rooms are one above the other...there's either a problem with a shared drainpipe carrying the shower water, or the drain cover and the drain itself, located in the middle of the shower tray (and under the ceiling-mounted shower head), are fragile, and stepping on them while showering damages a non-compliant installation! Unable to find alternative accommodation because the hotel was full, the manager accused me and expelled me. This completely ruined my trip. It's a source of both emotional and financial hardship. I couldn't wait to return to France; this violent situation seemed so unfair. In short: avoid this hotel at all costs. The manager is completely dishonest and verbally abusive. I wouldn't wish what I went through on anyone traveling alone!

A place to be avoided! It shouldn't be considered a hotel. The reception, which is also the "restaurant," smells musty. The room is extremely small and poorly ventilated. In the summer, you can't sleep because of the unbearable heat. You can barely walk around the bed. There's no room to open a suitcase. The stairs have narrow steps, which can easily lead to a fall. The street is noisy. The price charged doesn't match what's offered. For the same price, you can find much more comfortable hotels.

Loved it. Location was superb. Updated old authentic building.

The hotel is in a great location, close to everything. However, the rooms are small and modest, with few amenities. The bathroom itself is separated from the bedroom by only a glass pane and a curtain, which doesn't offer much privacy. The breakfast is delicious, and the staff is very kind and helpful. Overall, you pay a lot for the lack of amenities.

The location is great, it's clean, and the staff is very friendly. The only downside is there's no elevator. The building is historic and small, so there's no room for one.
