Perth runs on sunshine and distance: the sun drops into the Indian Ocean, the afternoon sea breeze locals call the Fremantle Doctor finally eases off, and the city's night crowd drifts across the railway lines into Northbridge. Upstairs on William Street, behind a side door on Forbes Road, Perth's gay sauna has been steaming away for three decades. That's the heart of it. Perth is one of the most isolated big cities on earth, and its cruising scene is small and concentrated: one well-run sauna that now doubles as a party venue, a couple of gay bars a few minutes' walk away, and Grindr. Keep it indoors and you'll have a relaxed, friendly night.
Legal in one line: Western Australia decriminalised sex between men with a law passed in 1989 that took effect in March 1990, equalised the age of consent in 2002 and began expunging historical convictions in 2018; same-sex marriage has been legal across Australia since 2017. Licensed sex-on-premises venues are legal, but an indecent act in a public place is a crime under section 203 of the WA Criminal Code, with a maximum of two years' imprisonment.
Perth Steam Works: the one venue that matters
Perth Steam Works is at 369 William Street, Northbridge, upstairs, with the entrance on Forbes Road. Travel Gay calls it Perth's only gay sauna, and we found no other in 2025–26. It has been running since the mid-1990s: OUTinPerth traces the plan back to 1995, and the venue celebrated its 30th birthday in September 2026, when it was also due to enter the Proud Awards Hall of Fame for 30 years of service to Perth's LGBTQIA+ communities.
Local businessman Mike Drummond and his partner took over in 2020, when the founding owner retired, and used the COVID lockdown to renovate the whole interior. Today it's part sauna, part club: Travel Gay lists a steam room, dry sauna, spa (jacuzzi), dark room, BDSM area with a sling, video lounge, private rooms to rent, lockers and a café bar, and OUTinPerth describes lounges, an open-air area for drinks, dance floors and a stripper pole. It's fully licensed, so you can have a drink on site. Free condoms and lube are provided.
- Hours: Travel Gay lists Sunday to Thursday 12:00–midnight and Friday and Saturday 12:00–04:00 (last updated June 2025). Event nights can change this, and reviewers mention occasional closures for private events, so check the venue's socials before you go.
- Prices: standard entry isn't consistently published. Travel Gay lists A$22 all day on Mondays and A$22 at Tuesday lunchtime (12:00–14:00); treat these as indicative.
- Themed nights: in September 2026 OUTinPerth listed Naked Night on Thursdays, an Under-30s night, Saturday DJ parties and Fluid, a monthly night for people of all genders. Fluid is a mixed night, not a men-only one, so if you want a men-only visit, avoid the Fluid dates and pick another night.
- Coming up: the venue's ticket page lists Fluid (all genders) on Tuesday 27 October, the Swalloween Halloween party on Saturday 31 October (21:00–04:00), a Pride Friday Fluid on 27 November, the night before the Pride Parade, and a New Year's Eve Fluid on 31 December 2026.
- Health on site: M Clinic runs sessions twice a week at the venue, with anonymous STI testing, PrEP prescriptions and mpox vaccinations, whether or not you're eligible for Medicare. That makes it useful for visitors.
- Crowd: a wide age range. Reviews on Travel Gay are mixed but often praise the cleanliness and the staff; some older reviews found it dated, which predates the 2020 renovation.
- Sunset first: Perth is on the Indian Ocean, and watching the sun go down over the water from Cottesloe or Swanbourne before heading into town is a West Australian ritual.
- Northbridge eats: the streets around James Street and William Street are full of late-opening Asian eateries, good for a late bowl of noodles or a plate of dumplings between the sauna and the bars.
- Fremantle: the port city at the mouth of the Swan River, about half an hour by train, has its own LGBTQ+ bar, The Flaming Galah, and makes a good day out.
- Getting there: Steam Works is a few minutes' walk from Perth station and the Perth Busport. Transperth runs trains and buses across the metro area; you pay with a SmartRider card, and free CAT buses loop around the city centre.
- Getting home: on weeknights Transperth's last trains leave the city around midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights extra late services run: in the October 2025 Mandurah line timetable the last train leaves Perth Underground at 02:15. Steam Works is open until 04:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, so if you stay late, plan on a taxi or rideshare (Uber works in Perth), and check the Transperth journey planner on the night.
- Cards and cash: Australia is overwhelmingly card and contactless; a little cash for lockers or tips doesn't hurt.
- Health: use the M Clinic sessions at Steam Works for testing and PrEP. If you need PEP after a risk, go to a hospital emergency department or sexual health clinic as soon as possible, within 72 hours.
- Apps: Grindr is the main app in Perth.
- Bring ID: licensed venues in WA can ask for proof of age; visitors should carry their passport.
- Consent and chems: "no" is always enough. If you see GHB around, never mix it with alcohol, and call 000 in an emergency.
- Beat – an outdoor or public cruising place (one to avoid).
- SOPV – sex-on-premises venue, the Australian term for saunas and cruise clubs.
- Arvo – afternoon. Servo – petrol station. No worries – you're welcome, no problem.
- Kaya – hello, in Noongar, the language of the Whadjuk Noongar people of the Perth area.
- Moort-ak Waadiny – the Noongar name for Wellington Square, where Fairday is held.
Before and after: Northbridge
Steam Works sits in Northbridge, Perth's nightlife district just north of the city centre, and the gay bars are a short walk away. The Court, a heritage pub and club at 50 Beaufort Street on the corner of James Street, has been a hub for Perth's LGBTQ+ crowd since the early 1990s, and OUTinPerth reported in January 2026 that its Sapphic Disco night was back. Connections, at 81 James Street, is listed by Visit Perth as open Wednesday to Saturday, until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with a dance floor and a rooftop terrace. Both make easy pre-drinks or a dance afterwards; neither is a cruise venue. Check their socials for this week's nights.

Why we don't send you to beats
In Australia a beat is an outdoor or public place where men meet for sex, and older listings, including some on this site, have named Perth parks. We don't give directions. Perth's parks and bushland are busy public spaces used by families, walkers and tourists; an indecent act in a place the public can access or see is a crime under section 203 of the WA Criminal Code, punishable by up to two years in prison; and isolated spots after dark make you an easy target for robbery or assault. Police can and do charge people for indecent acts in public places. With a licensed, friendly sauna open every day, there's no reason to take the risk.
Nude sunbathing: North Swanbourne
If you want sun without clothes, North Swanbourne Beach has a clothing-optional section marked by signs. Time Out calls it one of Perth's only two legal nude beaches, and it has long been popular with gay men for sunbathing. Nudity there is legal; sexual activity is not, and the same public-indecency law applies. Bring water and shade, and watch the afternoon wind and swell.
Couldn't confirm: we found no other dedicated gay cruise club open in Perth in 2025–26, so names from older guides are left out.

Where do gay men cruise in Perth?
Mostly at Perth Steam Works, the city's gay sauna at 369 William Street in Northbridge, which also runs themed nights and parties. We found no other dedicated gay cruise club in Perth in 2025–26, so the rest happens on Grindr and in Northbridge's gay bars.
Is there a gay sauna in Perth?
Yes: Perth Steam Works, at 369 William Street, Northbridge, with the entrance on Forbes Road. It has a steam room, dry sauna, spa, dark room, video lounge, private rooms and a licensed bar, and it celebrated its 30th birthday in September 2026.
What theme nights does Perth Steam Works run?
Thursday is Naked Night, and OUTinPerth's September 2026 round-up also listed an Under-30s night, Saturday DJ parties and Fluid, a monthly mixed night open to all genders. If you want a men-only session, skip the Fluid dates, and check the venue's Instagram or ticket page for this month's programme.
Is outdoor cruising legal in Perth?
No. Under section 203 of the Western Australian Criminal Code, an indecent act in a public place is a criminal offence that can carry up to two years' imprisonment. We don't give directions to beats; Perth Steam Works is the legal, safe option.
