Southbank, Melbourne: An LGBTQ+ Traveller's Guide

Southbank sits on the south bank of the Yarra River, directly opposite Melbourne's CBD and a two-minute walk across the footbridges from Flinders Street Station. It is Melbourne's arts and entertainment precinct rather than a gay neighbourhood in its own right, but its riverside hotels, restaurants and cultural institutions make it one of the most convenient bases for LGBTQ+ visitors exploring the city.

The heart of Southbank is the Melbourne Arts Precinct along St Kilda Road: Arts Centre Melbourne with its distinctive spire, Hamer Hall, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International), the Melbourne Recital Centre, the Malthouse Theatre and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). These venues program regularly around queer artists, drag, cabaret and community events, and the NGV and ACCA are worth checking before any visit. Along the river, the Southbank Promenade, Southgate and the Crown Melbourne entertainment complex form a busy strip of bars, restaurants and the Eureka Skydeck.

Southbank itself has no dedicated gay bars, clubs or saunas — this is genuinely the case, not an oversight. Melbourne's queer nightlife lives in a handful of nearby pockets, all a short tram ride or walk away. The current centre of gravity is Smith Street on the Fitzroy–Collingwood border, home to Sircuit, UBQ (UBQueer), DT's and, close by in Collingwood, The Peel Hotel (a long-running gay men's dance club) and The Laird, Australia's oldest gay-owned pub. Commercial Road in Prahran and South Yarra was the historic gay strip for decades; its anchor hotels closed around 2011 and it is now quieter, though a few venues and the annual pride crowds still gather there. The CBD, just over the river, adds mixed and pop-up queer nights.

Getting to the scene from Southbank is easy. Trams run along St Kilda Road and City Road, the free tram zone begins just across the river in the CBD, and Collingwood/Fitzroy is a short tram (route 86 up Smith Street) or rideshare away. Prahran and South Yarra are a quick trip on the Sandringham train line or trams down Chapel Street, and St Kilda's beachside bars are 15–20 minutes south by tram.

Melbourne's flagship LGBTQ+ event is the Midsumma Festival, which runs from mid-January to early February each year. Midsumma opens with Midsumma Carnival at Alexandra Gardens — on the river just east of Southbank — and closes with Pride March through St Kilda along Fitzroy Street. In March, the Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF), one of the Asia-Pacific's largest, screens across city cinemas and ACMI, and ChillOut Festival in nearby Daylesford draws a big rural-queer crowd. Southbank has no separate pride of its own; it functions as an accommodation and cultural base for the city-wide calendar.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is Southbank's strong suit. The precinct and the immediate riverfront offer everything from the five-star Langham on Southgate Avenue and the Crown Promenade beside the casino complex to the AC Hotel Melbourne Southbank and riverside options in the adjacent CBD and Docklands. All are gay-friendly and put you within walking distance of the arts venues and a short hop from the bars.

Southbank's dining runs from the Southgate riverfront terraces and Crown's restaurant row to the cafés and bars around City Road and Southbank Boulevard. Everything here is mainstream and welcoming rather than specifically queer, which suits Southbank's role as the polished, walkable side of a night out that usually ends further north or south.

Melbourne is one of Australia's most LGBTQ+-friendly cities. Victoria decriminalised homosexuality in 1980, has strong anti-discrimination protections through its Equal Opportunity Act, and same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 2017. Southbank is a well-lit, heavily visited public precinct, safe day and night; the usual big-city awareness applies late at night around the casino and river.

Beyond the city, easy day trips include the Mornington Peninsula and its beaches and hot springs to the south-east, the Great Ocean Road to the west, and the Dandenong Ranges to the east. Australia's currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD), English is the main language, and Melbourne's weather is famously changeable — pack layers whatever the season.

For LGBTQ+ travellers, Southbank works best as a comfortable, central home base: stay by the river among the galleries and theatres, then step across the bridge or onto a tram for Melbourne's queer bars, clubs and festival season.
