⚠️ Safety Notice — China (LGBTQ+ Score: 66/100)

Same-sex activity in China isn't illegal (decriminalized 1997), but there are no legal protections for LGBTQ+ people. Since 2021, the community has seen sustained official pressure. Be discreet in public. Use a VPN — download and configure one before arriving in China. Read our full China safety guide.

Beijing: China's Most Active LGBTQ+ Scene

Beijing's gay scene has outlasted Shanghai's, in part because it started with a lower public profile. The Workers' Stadium (Gongti) area in Chaoyang District still has the clearest concentration of LGBTQ+ venues in mainland China. Destination (目的地) is the biggest gay club — effectively the city's one dedicated gay venue, and a survivor of the 2020 Workers' Stadium rebuild. Tube Bar (管子) is a casual bar a few doors down on the same strip. The adjacent Sanlitun district is Beijing's main international nightlife zone — a lower-key, more cosmopolitan entry point.

Beijing has never held a public Pride march. Its queer-cultural anchor was the Beijing Queer Film Festival (founded 2001), repeatedly shut down by authorities and now driven underground with no public edition for years; the Beijing LGBT Center closed under official pressure in May 2023. There's no open Pride event today — community life happens privately and by word of mouth.

Finding Your Way Around

The Beijing gay scene doesn't use visible LGBTQ+ signage. Venues are there, but they're understated; you need to know where to go. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples aren't a good idea. The Workers' Stadium area is well-known within Beijing's gay community and widely documented. It's not hidden, but it keeps a low external profile.

Apps: Blued — the big Beijing-based gay app — was pulled from mainland Chinese app stores in November 2025, though existing installs still work and its international edition (HeeSay) is available abroad. Grindr isn't on Chinese stores either and needs a VPN. Assume any dating app is monitored, and set things up before you arrive.

VPN: Set it up before you arrive. Download and test it from outside China. Getting a VPN once you're in the country is getting harder.

Getting There

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) serve the capital. You can get to Workers' Stadium by Metro Line 10 (Tuanjiehu station) or Line 2 (Dongsishitiao station, then a taxi). Sanlitun is a short walk from Tuanjiehu station.
