Gay Netanya: The Honest 2026 Guide

Let’s skip the fluff: Netanya has no gay bar, no gay club, no gay sauna, and no LGBTQ+ community centre. It’s a sprawling residential beach city of roughly 235,000 people. For queer nightlife, almost everyone takes the train south to Tel Aviv, about 30 minutes away. What Netanya does have is a long clifftop promenade, sea-view hotels that undercut Tel Aviv prices, an unofficial clothing-optional beach a few kilometres south, and a small but real history of Pride. If you’re here for the beach and treat Tel Aviv as your night out, it works.

Legally, the ground is solid. Same-sex relations have been legal since 1988, workplace discrimination banned since 1992, and foreign same-sex marriages registered since a 2006 Supreme Court ruling. Civil marriage of any kind remains off the table inside Israel.

About the city

Netanya opened its gates in 1929, named for Nathan Straus, the American philanthropist and Macy’s co-owner. It’s Israel’s seventh-largest city (234,813 residents per 2024 CBS figures), sitting on 14 km of Mediterranean coast in the Sharon region. That’s 30 km north of Tel Aviv and 56 km south of Haifa. The population mix is unusual for Israel: a large French-speaking community that swelled after the 2000s, many Russian speakers, the country’s biggest Ethiopian-Jewish community, and Kiryat Sanz, a Haredi neighbourhood in the north. On a Friday promenade walk, you’ll hear French as often as Hebrew.

Where the scene actually is

It isn’t here. We scoured English and Hebrew sources—Mako Pride, ice.co.il, Walla, Travel Gay, misterb&b—and found no gay bar, no regular party line, and no sauna in the city, current or recent. Consequently, there’s no “closed” list; nothing shut down because nothing was open.

Bars around Independence Square (Kikar HaAtzmaut), Herzl Street, and the Poleg and Ir Yamim complexes in the south are standard mainstream spots. Same-sex couples generally go unremarked in tourist areas, but none of these places are gay or market to gay customers. We don’t list them as if they were.

For a gay night out, go to Tel Aviv. Trains from Netanya station hit Tel Aviv Savidor Center in roughly half an hour, running about every 30 minutes on weekdays. Tel Aviv holds the country’s gay bars, saunas, and Hilton Beach, the designated gay beach. Check our Tel Aviv-Yafo guide for 2026 openings.

Beaches

The beach is the main draw. The 2025 list of declared, lifeguarded beaches includes Sironit (North and South), Herzl, Amphi, The Seasons, Lagoon, Poleg, and Tzanz. A free public elevator drops from the promenade down the cliff to Sironit. All are mainstream family beaches; none is gay.

One caveat: Tzanz beach, by Kiryat Sanz in the north, is gender-separated for religious bathers with fixed men’s and women’s days. It isn’t mixed or gay. Pick another.

Ga’ash Beach, about 10 km south of the centre and outside Netanya’s boundary (Hof HaSharon Regional Council), is the spot gay guides actually name. Travel Gay and misterb&b list it as clothing-optional with a gay reputation, and Israeli naturist coverage still mentions it. Nudity is unofficial: Israel has no legally designated nude beach, and police or inspectors can order people to cover up. There are no lifeguards or facilities, the cliffs on that stretch are unstable, and public sex is illegal. We don’t publish directions or times.

Pride and community

Netanya’s first Pride march hit the promenade on 12 July 2019. About 400 people walked to Independence Square under heavy police presence after online threats, per Walla. Late mayor Miriam Feirberg-Ikar didn’t attend, and the city offered no support. A second march followed on 18 June 2021, organized by local activists with the Aguda (Israel’s national LGBTQ+ association) after the municipality again declined to back it. Four Pride billboards were vandalized that week; the municipality condemned the act (Mako). July 2022 saw a family Pride picnic at the Piano complex. We found no Netanya Pride march in 2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026, and nothing is announced for 2027.

Things have shifted since then. In the Aguda’s 2026 Pride Index, which ranks municipal LGBTQ+ services, Netanya landed 4th among large cities with 99 points, earning a special award for its ranking jump. This was credited to tolerance education, community activities, and welfare/family services (ice.co.il, 28 May 2026). In January 2026, Avi Slama was elected mayor in a special election following Feirberg-Ikar’s death in November 2025.

We couldn’t confirm a Netanya branch of IGY (Israel Gay Youth) or any other LGBTQ+ group with a fixed address, so we don’t list one. For support, the Aguda’s national services and the Tel Aviv LGBTQ Center at Gan Meir are the nearest established options.

Where to stay

Hotels are Netanya’s strength. Most sit along the clifftop promenade (Gad Machnes Street and Nitsa Boulevard) or on Oved Ben Ami Boulevard further south. They’re mainstream, not gay venues. Leonardo Plaza and Hotel Tower of David have the best Google scores in the centre. VERT Lagoon in the south is newer and bigger but requires a ride from Independence Square. Margoa, SEANERGY, and The Seasons put you right on the promenade. Staying in Netanya and taking the train to Tel Aviv is a common money-saver, but check the last train back before you go out.

Practical tips

Shabbat: Israel Railways stops from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, as do most buses. If you plan a Friday night in Tel Aviv, budget for a taxi back (or a shared sherut where one runs).

Airport: Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) is about 35 km away. A few direct trains a day take 35-40 minutes; otherwise, change in Tel Aviv. Timetables shifted often in 2025-2026, so check rail.co.il or Moovit on the day.

Security: Missile alerts can happen anywhere in Israel. Install the Home Front Command app and note the nearest shelter (miklat) in your hotel. Check your own government’s travel advisory before booking.

Holidays: Netanya gets busy with French and Israeli families in summer and during Jewish holidays, when hotel prices spike.
