The Memory at On On Hotel

Excellent location in the middle of the market held every Sunday in the old city… A nice hotel, but reservations are difficult; you must book early.

Tiw is makes excellent coffee and is very kind and accommodating. I would really recommending this place.

The Memory at On On Hotel is the oldest hotel in Phuket, Thailand. Established in 1927 (originally opening in 1929 as the Un Un Hotel), this legendary property is located along Phang Nga Road in the absolute heart of Phuket Old Town. It is widely celebrated for its beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese architecture, immersive vintage atmosphere, and its distinct pop-culture claim to fame as the gritty Bangkok backpacker hostel featured in the opening scenes of the 2000 cult film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Designed by craftsmen from Penang, the property exhibits a striking white street façade complete with arched entryways and traditional wooden window shutters. Inside, the property transitions from a bustling street-front presence to a series of deep, open-air inner courtyards designed to catch light and natural breeze. The interior design layers decades of memory with: • Peranakan elements: Patterned floor tiles, dark timber furniture, and vibrant blue and red color schemes. • Historical artifacts: The lobby and corridors display a curated gallery of antiques, including old typewriters, vintage wall clocks, retro jukeboxes, and weathered travel luggage. • Period audio: Soft 1920s melodies play gently in the common areas, enhancing the sense of historical immersion.

I stayed for just 0.5 nights, but this hotel was so good that it felt like a waste to leave. First off, the staff were friendly, so I felt good right from the entrance. There was no elevator, but a staff member helped me, and the room was clean! Above all, it was cool! The water was soft, too~ Being located in the Old Town, the accessibility was also great! It feels like a waste to stay for only 0.5 nights. Even when I checked out in the evening, they came out to catch a taxi for me; I definitely saw their name, but I'm not sure if it was correct! Nathan, thank you until the very end! It was a short stay, but it was such a good memory that I am leaving a review.

For me in the top 4 of best affordable hotels I have visited. Atmosphere is undescribable, the old music in the bar together with the old suitcases makes everything complete: back in time. The staff seems to be trained to have a smile on their face all day, or at least everytime you look them in the eyes. Everybody is gentle and friendly. If you come with a car, try to get 1 of their 2 free parking lots. You will get a key during your stay to (un)lock the gate. Stayed in the junior suite which was nicely decorated and had a comfortable soft mattress. Little outside seating and everything in style. Welcome Card handwritten by room maid Pia, who we unfortunately didn't meet, but she did an excellent job. Staff and hotel made this an excellent experience. Will come back in the future.
