PHUKET: LGBTQ+ TRAVEL GUIDE

OVERVIEW

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and one of Southeast Asia's most established gay-travel destinations. Its LGBTQ+ nightlife is highly concentrated: almost the entire dedicated gay scene — bars, cabaret, go-go venues and the island's only gay sauna — sits in the Paradise Complex in Patong, on the west coast (covered in detail on our Patong guide). Away from Patong, Phuket's appeal for LGBTQ+ visitors lies in gay-friendly beach resorts spread across the island, a small but growing queer presence in Old Phuket Town, and an island-wide Pride that has become one of the region's most visible celebrations. Same-sex marriage became legal across Thailand in January 2025, and Phuket is regarded as one of the country's most welcoming areas for gay travellers.

NEIGHBOURHOODS

Patong is the heart of the scene. Contrary to a common misconception, the gay bars are NOT on Bangla Road — Bangla is Patong's straight go-go and beer-bar strip. The gay hub is the pedestrianised Paradise Complex (Soi Paradise) on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road, a five-minute walk from Bangla, home to venues such as ZAG Club, My Way cabaret and Aquarius Sauna. For nightlife, this is where you go; see our dedicated Patong page for the full rundown.

Old Phuket Town, the island's inland administrative and cultural centre, is not a nightlife hub, but it has a slowly growing, integrated queer presence around its Sino-Portuguese shophouse streets. The stylish cocktail bar Club No. 43 on Yaowarat Road is the most visible gay-friendly spot, and since 2024 Old Town has hosted Pride parades and programming.

Karon and Kata, roughly 20 minutes south of Patong, are quieter beach areas with gay-friendly resorts and a relaxed pace, better suited to travellers who prioritise the beach over clubbing. Surin, Bangtao and Cherngtalay on the north-west coast are upmarket resort areas; the mainstream but gay-popular CATCH Beach Club, known for its annual White Party, is here. Nai Harn and Rawai, at the island's southern tip, are laid-back and scenic.

NIGHTLIFE

Phuket's dedicated gay nightlife is essentially all in Patong's Paradise Complex — casual bars, drag and cabaret shows (including the famous Simon Cabaret near the Patong–Kathu edge), go-go bars and the island's gay sauna. Outside Patong the nightlife is mainstream: Old Town offers gay-friendly cocktail bars such as Club No. 43, and the north-west coast has gay-popular beach clubs like CATCH. For a bar-by-bar guide to the gay venues, see our Patong page.

BEACHES AND CRUISING

Phuket's beaches are a major draw. Freedom Beach and Paradise Beach, near Patong, are long-standing gay-popular sunbathing coves reached by boat or a steep track. At the island's southern tip, the quiet southern end of Nai Harn Beach has a long-standing, low-key reputation as an informal gay meeting and cruising spot, most active in the evening; it is a public beach, so discretion and normal caution apply. Thailand does not criminalise same-sex activity, but public nudity and sex in public remain illegal.

PRIDE AND EVENTS

Phuket Pride grew out of the Phuket Gay Carnival, first held in 1999 and historically staged in April. From 2024 the festival moved to June to align with global Pride Month and expanded beyond Patong into Phuket Old Town. Recent editions have run in early June (2025: 2–8 June, themed "Be You, Be Equality", with the main parade along the Patong beachfront). Expect a week of parades, parties, cabaret and community events; exact dates shift year to year, so confirm in advance. In a landmark for the island, Phuket also hosts the InterPride General Meeting and World Conference in late October 2026 — the first time the global Pride federation's annual conference is held in Asia.

WHERE TO STAY

Phuket has gay-owned and gay-friendly hotels across the island. In Patong you'll find gay-oriented guesthouses within walking distance of the Paradise Complex (see the Patong guide). Around the island, gay-friendly resorts cluster in Kata and Karon (quieter and beach-focused), Surin and Bangtao (upmarket), and Nai Harn and Rawai (laid-back). Many welcome LGBTQ+ guests as a matter of course; booking platforms and gay-travel sites flag the most popular options.

GETTING AROUND

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is about 30 km north of Patong; transfers take roughly 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Metered taxis are inconsistent, so agree fares in advance or use ride-hailing apps such as Grab. Rental motorbikes are popular but require a licence and caution, as Phuket's roads can be dangerous. The island is large, so allow 30–60 minutes between beach areas.

FOOD AND DINING

Patong, Old Town and the resort areas all offer strong dining — Thai street food, fresh seafood and international restaurants. Old Phuket Town is especially known for its Sino-Portuguese cafés, Peranakan cuisine and the Sunday Walking Street market on Thalang Road.

DAY TRIPS

Phuket is a base for exploring the Andaman Sea. The Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts, the Similan Islands (diving and snorkelling) and Krabi province are all popular day trips or overnight excursions.

SAFETY AND PRACTICAL INFO

Thailand legalised same-sex marriage in January 2025 — the first country in Southeast Asia to do so — and Phuket is among its most LGBTQ+-friendly places, long accustomed to gay tourism. Public displays of affection are best kept modest in line with general Thai norms, though they are unremarkable in gay venues and resorts. Standard traveller precautions apply for petty theft and nightlife safety. Healthcare is good, with international hospitals on the island.

WHEN TO VISIT

High season (November to March) brings the best weather, the biggest crowds and the highest prices. June is Pride month. The May to October low season is wetter, with September and October the wettest, but it is cheaper and quieter.

Old Phuket Town is mainly a cultural and business centre rather than a nightlife hub, but it has a growing, integrated queer presence. The cocktail bar Club No. 43 is the best-known gay-friendly spot, and since 2024 the town has hosted Pride parades and programming. Phuket's LGBTQ+ community group, Andaman Power, is also based here.

Yes. Phuket Pride, descended from the 1999 Phuket Gay Carnival, is now held in June across Patong Beach and Phuket Old Town. Phuket also hosts the InterPride World Conference in late October 2026 — the first time it is held in Asia.
