Evening in Genoa starts in the caruggi, the dark, narrow alleys of the old town, where washing hangs overhead, a bakery is still selling the last oily squares of focaccia, and the noise of Piazza delle Erbe bounces off six-storey walls. You order a spritz, someone hands round a plate of farinata, and the port glints at the end of the lane. That's the easy part. The gay scene itself is small, scattered and low-key: one Saturday-night gay disco and a men-only cruise bar out west in Sampierdarena, a queer-friendly cocktail bar in the old town, and a handful of mixed bars where nobody minds who you came with. There's no gay street, so plan your night before you set out.

Legal in one line: same-sex sexual activity is legal in Italy, same-sex couples have had civil unions since 2016 (but not marriage or joint adoption), and there is still no national hate-crime law covering sexual orientation. Genoa itself is liberal, and in the centre nobody will look twice at two men having a drink together.

The queer venues

Genoa's queer scene comes down to three places. Two are in Sampierdarena, the old working port district just west of Genova Principe station: the Saturday disco and the cruise bar. The third is a small cocktail bar in the historic centre (Centro Storico), where the aperitivo squares are. The two areas are a few kilometres apart, so expect at least one taxi.

Virgo Discoclub · Via Alfredo Carzino 13r, Sampierdarena

Genoa's gay disco and the main night out. It's a Saturday-night party over two levels, with a dance floor, several bars, drag shows and themed nights, and it has been a fixture of Genoa's nightlife for years. It opens late in the evening and runs into the early hours; we haven't found published door prices or exact times, so check the club's social media before heading out, particularly outside the main season. The crowd is mixed LGBTQ+ with friends and allies. Sampierdarena isn't an area for wandering about on foot at 4am, so take a taxi there and back.

Lux Club · Via Sampierdarena 112r, Sampierdarena

A men-only cruise bar, formerly Lussurian, also in Sampierdarena, not far from Virgo. Its 2026 status is unclear: misterb&b now marks it closed, Travel Gay's listing was last updated in May 2025, and we found no dated 2026 events, so check its social media before you go. Travel Gay lists a bar, video rooms, a maze, darkrooms and private cabins, with nights on Wednesday (22:00–04:00) and Friday to Sunday (from 22:00 until 03:00 or 04:00) and, often, a naked party on Sunday. Those hours date from 2025, so check the club's Facebook page (luxclubgenova) for this week's programme. It's a private club: an ANDDOS membership card is required, sold at the door; bring photo ID. Our sibling Genoa cruising guide covers it in more detail.

Loska · Via di Sant'Agnese 25r, historic centre

A small, alternative cocktail bar in the caruggi with a clearly queer-friendly feel. It isn't a gay bar as such, but regulars describe it as a safe space for queer people. Expect creative cocktails (start with the house drink, the Loska, or the kimchi Bloody Mary), DJ sets, board games, vegetarian food and fair prices. It's an evening bar that stays open late; hours aren't published in one reliable place, so check before you go.

Mixed and gay-friendly places

These are not gay bars. They are mainstream venues where same-sex couples are welcome, useful for an early drink or a change of scene.

Banano Tsunami · Ponte Embriaco 1, Porto Antico

A big, mixed bar and restaurant on a pier in the old port, with sea views, cocktails, local focaccia and music. It's a good place for an early drink. It was also the venue for the official after-party of Liguria Pride 2026.

Le Baron Blanc Lounge Social Club · Via Canevari 60R, Marassi

A shisha lounge and cocktail bar, not a gay bar, and not central: it is in the residential Marassi district, north-east of Brignole station. It presents itself as gay-friendly and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Hookah is the main event, served until around 02:00, with a choice of flavours; sharing one is the way to keep the bill down, as reviewers find drinks and shisha on the pricey side. It also hosts its own party nights. Reviewers say its online opening hours aren't always right, so phone ahead (+39 389 100 6687).

Renamed: Lussurian, the cruise bar in Via Sampierdarena, is now Lux Club; older guides may still use the old name.

Saunas and cruising

Genoa's gay sauna, Aqua Club, is a short walk from Piazza De Ferrari; see our Genoa saunas guide. For cruise bars and the rules of the game, see the Genoa cruising guide.

Keep it indoors: sex in public places is an offence in Italy and can bring heavy fines, and some outdoor spots around the old walls have a reputation for being unsafe at night. Stick to the cruise bar and the sauna, where you're legal, private and among people who want the same thing.

A night out, the Genoese way

Do as the city does and start at aperitivo time, around 19:00, in the old town. Piazza delle Erbe is the nightlife hub of the Centro Storico, with San Donato, San Bernardo, Piazza Sarzano and Piazza delle Vigne close by. Order a spritz or a glass of Ligurian white (Vermentino or Pigato) and wait for the snacks: squares of focaccia, fugassa in dialect, salty and glistening with olive oil, or a slice of farinata, the chickpea pancake baked in a wood oven. Dinner is trofie or trenette al pesto, made with the small-leafed Ligurian basil, pine nuts, garlic, pecorino and olive oil. If you've never had pesto in Genoa, it's worth the trip on its own.

After dinner, slip into Loska for a cocktail, and on a Saturday take a taxi west to Virgo after midnight. The next morning, do the most Genoese thing of all: dunk a piece of focaccia into your cappuccino at a bakery counter. It sounds wrong. It isn't. And if your neighbour at the counter is complaining about the weather, the traffic or the price of everything, that's mugugno, the Genoese muttered grumble. In sailors' slang it meant grumbling about an order while carrying it out anyway, and, so the story goes, the sailors of Camogli signed on with a diritto di mugugno, a right to grumble.

Practical tips

    • Getting to Sampierdarena: by day, regional trains from Principe or Brignole to Genova Sampierdarena take a few minutes. At night, use a taxi. When you leave Virgo or Lux Club, book one rather than walking to a rank: Radio Taxi Genova is on 010 5966, and the itTaxi app also works in Genoa.
    • Metro: the city's single metro line does not run all night. Under the summer 2026 timetable (15 June to 13 September) it closed at 21:00 on weekdays and at midnight on Saturdays, so don't count on it to get home from a club night; check AMT's website or app for current hours.
    • Strikes: AMT, the city's bus and metro company, has had several strike days in 2026, including on Saturdays. Check before relying on buses.
    • Membership cards: carry photo ID if you plan to visit Lux Club or the sauna. The card is valid for a year at other member clubs across Italy.
    • Safety: the caruggi are atmospheric and busy until late, but Via Prè and the lanes of the old port are a different matter after midnight. In September 2026 the city began round-the-clock local-police patrols in Prè, the former Ghetto, the Maddalena and the Darsena because of drug dealing and street degradation. Late at night, stick to the busier streets such as Via Balbi and Via San Lorenzo, keep your phone out of sight, and don't cut through the alleys between the port and Principe on foot.
    • Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both used; the grid is small but gets busier in summer.
    • Health: if you need PEP after a risk, it should be started within 72 hours. Go to a hospital emergency department (pronto soccorso). Arcigay Genova, at Via del Lagaccio 92R, can tell you where to get tested in the city.

    Liguria Pride

Liguria Pride takes place in Genoa each June. In 2026 the Pride Village ran at the Giardini Luzzati in the old town from 6 to 13 June, with drag talks and shows, queer quiz and karaoke nights, stand-up comedy, a silent disco, and free anonymous HIV and syphilis testing with ANLAIDS Liguria. The parade was on Saturday 13 June: it gathered at 15:00 in Via San Benedetto, near Principe station, set off at 16:00 along Via Balbi, Piazza Corvetto and Via XX Settembre, and reached Piazza De Ferrari at around 19:30. Thousands marched. The party carried on with concerts between De Ferrari and the Luzzati, and the official after-party was at Banano Tsunami. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing; watch liguriapride.it.

A few words of Italian (and Genoese)

    • Un aperitivo / uno spritz, per favore – an aperitivo / a spritz, please.
    • Il conto, per favore – the bill, please.
    • Tessera – membership card (you'll hear it at the cruise-bar door).
    • Locale gay – gay venue. Serata – a party night.
    • Mi chiama un taxi? – could you call me a taxi?
    • Fugassa – focaccia, in Genoese dialect.
    • Belin! – the all-purpose Genoese exclamation (wow, damn, seriously?). Use it once you know someone.
    • Mugugno – a grumble, the Genoese speciality.

Frequently asked questions

What are the gay bars in Genoa?

Genoa has a small scene rather than a gay district. The core venues are Virgo Discoclub, the Saturday gay disco in Sampierdarena, Loska, a queer-friendly cocktail bar in the old town, and Lux Club, a men-only cruise bar whose 2026 status is unclear. Banano Tsunami and Le Baron Blanc are mixed, gay-friendly places rather than gay bars.

Is there a gay club in Genoa?

Yes. Virgo Discoclub, at Via Alfredo Carzino 13r in Sampierdarena, holds gay parties on Saturday nights over two levels, with DJs and drag shows. It is west of the centre, so take a taxi there and back, and check its social media before you go.

Do I need a membership card for gay bars in Genoa?

Only for the private clubs. Lux Club, the cruise bar, has required an ANDDOS card, which is sold at the door with photo ID. Ordinary bars such as Loska or Banano Tsunami do not need one.

When is Liguria Pride in Genoa?

In June. In 2026 the parade was on Saturday 13 June, from Via San Benedetto to Piazza De Ferrari, after a week-long Pride Village at the Giardini Luzzati from 6 June. The official after-party was at Banano Tsunami on the old port.

Is Genoa safe for gay travellers at night?

Generally yes; Genoa is a relaxed, liberal port city. After midnight, avoid Via Prè and the back lanes of the old port, and book a taxi (Radio Taxi Genova, 010 5966) for the trip to or from Sampierdarena.
