Genoa: Italy's LGBTQ+ Port

Genoa is Italy’s best-kept secret. It's the country’s largest port, with Europe’s biggest medieval city center and a food tradition that gave us pesto, focaccia, and farinata. But it’s been overshadowed by prettier neighbors like Cinque Terre and Milan.

The gay scene here is smaller, but it's got what you need. Giazz Bar on Via Macaggi is the main spot. For an underground club, try Voodoo Club in the Caruggi. Every July, Genova Pride marches through the Baroque Strada Nuova.

Genoa is a city that rewards poking around. The Caruggi at night—dark, full of echoing footsteps and sudden churches—feels like nowhere else in Italy. The Strada Nuova museums hold works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Caravaggio. And the port, redesigned by Renzo Piano’s Porto Antico project, is a dramatic Ligurian waterfront. Come for the city, stay for the pesto.
